Born in Ontario, Canada a young Joel, who already showed a knack for electronics, began work in Animation and Web Design before eventually shifting to working on music, first experimenting with Chiptune sounds. He took on the moniker Deadmau5 after he found the body of a frozen rodent in a computer he had built.
He began building up a name through the independent dance site Beatport, eventually going on to release his debut album ‘Get Scraped’ in 2005. This helped to further his popularity until in 2007 he was able to found his own label ‘Mau5trap which, with the support of established dance superpowers ‘Ministry of Sound’ and ‘Ultra Records’ released 2008’s ‘Random Album Title’. Singles like ‘Move for Me’, a collaboration with American producer Kaskade gave Joel his first taste of chart success.
The follow up album, 2009’s ‘For Lack of a Better Name’ birthed some of Joel’s most popular material to date including ‘Ghosts ‘n’ Stuff’. He followed up the album with a tour on which he gave fans the unique opportunity of picking up a recording of the show on a USB flash drive as soon as the gig was over.
Unique touches like this have helped Deadmau5 to become one of the biggest names in dance music today and is a staple at EDM festivals. After signing with famed label ‘Astralwerks’ Deadmau5 might actually be in a position to challenge Mickey and become the most famous mouse in the world.

I had the pleasure of seeing a free Deadmau5 show in Miami at the Ice Palace. He was one of the first EDM artists I started listening to, but during my four years of going to concerts and festivals, I never had the chance to see him. He played at the Ice Palace in Miami as part of a deal for the Miami nightlife culture to prove that Miami was not full of a bunch of spoiled trustfund babies. He was scheduled to play a four hour non-stop set from 1AM to 5AM. It was mindblowing. Despite his obnoxious internet persona and loud-mouthed antics, he's still an incredible producer and knows how to put on a great show. With four hours to play, he was able to pull out all of the cards with music spanning the whole spectrum. In his normal fashion, he would craft long intros for songs, so that you'd be begging him to drop the first verse by the time it came, demonstrating his incredible control over the crowd. But it wasn't all EDM. Towards the end of the night, he dropped "Killing In the Name Of" by Rage Against the Machine, which made the crowd go wild. Songs like that are that extra piece of energy that set artists apart from mainstream EDM artists, especially considering how seamlessly he wove the song into a set full of dance music. As the night came to a close, I wasn't ready to leave, despite having 4 hours of non-stop deadmau5, the longest single-artist show I've ever seen before.
The Canadian masked artist Joel Thomas Zimmerman better known by his alter-ego Deadmau5 has become an iconic name on the EDM dance/electro circuit since his first release in 2005. Since then he has had a number of hit albums in both the UK and the US and an internationally recognised piece of dance music in the form of 'I Remember'.
His live show is a hedonistic experience from the moment the drone like lights illuminate the stage and the heavy bass begins to shake the ground. The audience can barely contain their excitement as the man himself appears and approaches his decks like a preacher to an alter. The shining, almost sinister smiling mouse head is the centrepiece as the beats of 'Limit Break' begin.
Deadmau5 keeps his audience dancing throughout as he mixes tracks such as 'Ghosts n' Stuff' and 'Maths' into extensive pieces of electro. Finishing with 'Strobes' which is accompanied by an impressive light show, the crowd leave with a dazzle in their eye having witnessed one of the most surreal shows on the dance circuit.
OH man, Deadmau5 at the 9:30 Club in DC was one of the most fun shows I have ever been to. The small venue really allowed for that private show feeling and I was blown away by the epic lighting design. It was my first time seeing him, I have seen him three more times since, and I didn't know what to expect. I was totally engrossed in the sound and the lights that nothing else around me mattered. I had a constant smile on my face. You could tell everyone else around me was enjoying their own world as well.
Seeing Deadmau5 at larger type festivals is also a great experience. You could hear and feel the music all over. He really commands the attention with the melodic type beats mixed in with the heavy bass. I think he was one of the main reasons EDM has really grown in the past 4-5 years and will continue to grow. Deadmau5 has a very unique sound that differentiates himself from other type of DJs and will allow him to keep rocking for years on!
So basically my girlfriend and I got a hotel and used Uber to get to and from the venue. My girlfriends phone fell out of her pocket, so with the phone, our tickets were left to drive away to god knows where. What I love is that we were able to use the Ticket Master app to log into her account and voila, our tickets were there and we were able to get into the venue.
The concert was wonderful, the people were pleasant, and most importantly, my girlfriend's first EDM experience was one to be remembered! We had a great time, wish we could go the next two days!!
I will never see Deadmau5 again. He was drunk and unprofessional on stage. He stepped off of stage for a good 10 mins because he couldn't handle his shit. Someone plugged in a phone and played songs from YouTube. Such a waste of money. I'm sick of artists coming to Hawaii taking a vacation when we spend 65+ to support them. It's obvious he's gone arrogant. He has $$$ so he could give a shit.
Wish I bought Steve Aoki tickets instead. Saw him twice and he's on it !
Fuck you Deadmau5. I was that chick given you the finger in the crowd :P
One of the best. We waited from 7 to 10 in the rain , as soon as it stop rainin, deadmau5 started to play. At first he showed up without mask, but after he put it on. The music was pure magic and I loved it.
The only thing is that I thought that he might got disappointed with the crowd which wasn't that excited, probably that's why he went away just the moment he finished ignoring people asking for a last one. Anyway I understand him, I wasn't happy about the people too but it was a special night and his music brought me beyond.
Great performance by one of the best in the business! His set was solid, with a variety of styles woven into the show. Lighting effects with the Cube were pretty awesome though they're probably designed for Joel to hide behind, jk but for real. I love the new mouse head and enjoyed the live vocalist. Wish there would have been a few more shirt options for purchase but, regardless, it was a great show! Will see him again.
I had been in union club 2 times to see deadmau5.
Both of them is a mind rape, the music, the bass and the people make this one of the environments to enjoy electronic music.
The sound is amazing, you can literally fell how your soul vibrate the music.
Also Deadmau5 plays with the drops so nice that you are constantly in a high state of mind.
If you like house music , this type of event is a must in your life.
It was absolutely breathtaking. While I do have ringing in my ears almost 12 hours later, it was everything I imagined it to be. 4 years of wait was perfectly done by the entire performance. The only thing I wish was different was the inclusion of merchandise. Other than that, 11/10 mau5 forever
Hands down premier production and experience. The CubeV3 tour is unlike anything that’s been seen in the EDM show/festival community. A true original design that goes beyond a dj in front of an LED screen. I highly recommend seeming Deadmau5 on this tour and seeing the cube for yourself.
