Mumford and Sons was not the only band to make playing the banjo or harmonica look cool, because there was also Matthew and The Atlas. Trying to make folk rock music popular has been an uphill battle for most, but it takes just a little something extra special for a band to make it appeal to a large audience, and there is absolutely no doubt that Matthew And The Atlas have what it takes.
The quintuplet band keeps things simple, and puts the concentration on the music. The band instrumentals consist of banjo, acoustic guitar, drums, keyboard, and accordion, and all of them providing some vocals. The harmonies between the vocals are excellent and real, as in they are truly in sync with one another. They have a folk rock sound, which, during their live sets, surrounds you and puts you in a good, relaxed mood; almost like nothing in the world is wrong. They encourage participation too, getting the audience to clap along to keep the beat and add to the sound. Because of the music they play, their shows are very homely, like you are sat back on the porch and enjoying the company of your favorite people.
Great Mathew & The Atlas gig last night at the Fleece! Seeing them for the first time can’t believe that more people have not heard of such a great act. We wanted more so the set list just glimpsed the depths of talent that clearly exists and that that a whole concert might have displayed. Great solo singing particularly when they played acoustic and off stage and ‘in the round’. Will definitely see them again. Good songwriting, harmonies and guitar what more could you want.
They've done it again...absolutely breathtaking performance as always! Made even more beautiful with the help of the stunning Union Chapel, it was one not to be missed. As an avid gig goer, I can wholeheartedly say that Matthew and the Atlas are one of the best, actually THE best band I have ever seen live. Hats off to them, goosebumps every song :) Looking forward to the next one already!
i saw mathew and the atlas in may in norwich. not only is the music wonderful and very moving and well written all of the band are friendly warm and care deeply about their fans. i had a smile on my face for weeks after i met them. i found them when they supported tom chaplin at hastings and it was love at first sight. i hope to see lots more of them. they are just so brilliant.x
This consert was magical! Matthew and the Atlas are just as good live as they are in the studio, if not better! They manage to be so intimate and vulnerable, yet down to earth and entertaining at the same time, and the balance of Matthew Hegarty's incridble voice, his poetry, and the bands harmonies are so painfully beautiful. I can't wait to hear more!
The concert of Matthew and the Atlas was a good one. Matthew Hagerty has a great, great vocal. It's so exceptional and that distinguishes them. Although their performance should be improved, the rest compensates it. I'd highly recommend visiting a nice, unique band like this!
It was awesome!
They are able to deliver great tunes, performed brilliantly with a real warmth between the band mates, whatever size the venue they are able make people feel at home, they really deserve to be much more widely heard, please help spread the word!
