The show was great - Grant-Lee/Grant-Lee Phillips is one of my favorite musicians of all time, and he definitely has one of the most incredibly voices I've ever heard (a lot like Dallas Greene, of City & Colour)! And I was fortunate enough to spend quite a while hanging out and talking with Phillips after the show.
However, I do have one complaint that is totally unrelated to him or his music. The overall experience was greatly diminished because the venue, Eddie's Attic, did not disclose at the time of the ticket sale/advertising the show that this concert preceded another, and that at 9pm or so, everyone would be required to leave the "concert hall" (bar) because another band followed! The advertising materials and ticket info. gave the impression that Grant-Lee was opening for Steve Poltz, and that Poltz would start at 7pm and Phillips would follow (presumably around 8-9pm).
Instead, the show began precisely at 7pm (or so I heard, because we didn't make it there until about 8:15pm for these reasons), and the entire thing was over around 8:40pm! Then an entirely different artist performed a completely separate show thereafter!
In one sense it worked out well because I probably would not have gotten the chance to hang out with Phillips had the event followed the usual format. On the other hand, I hardly got to enjoy the music at all, because we arrived towards the end, not realizing - due to no fault of our own - that the two artists (Poltz and Phillips) would be basically playing one short and very early concert together. I mean who in the hell would think that a concert at a bar would end so early (even on a weekday)? Or that there would be two completely separate shows and customers who bought tickets to the first show could not stay for the second?
In sum, Phillips and Poltz were great, but Eddie's Attic - and the ticket vendors - need to provide MUCH more detail about the exact nature and timing of the event, etc.
I’m an absolute sucker for multi-instrumentalists, and watching Grant-Lee Phillips perform live and switch between his guitar, piano, banjo, drums, and so many more is something that I’ll never learn to take for granted. His voice is also incredibly versatile, and hearing him transition from a rocky track into a dulcet folk tune is something that I’ve never heard a musician master before.
His support act was great, a little acoustic trio who sang country folk music, and they warmed up the cored nicely. When Phillips took to the stage, he walked out and sat behind his piano, and had a brief chat with us in the intimate audience before launching into his first track, Happiness. He held the audience in absolute silence, and then we erupted into applause at the end. He was great at getting us to sing on some of his tracks, so that he could add harmonies to the melody without his loop pedal.
He played through a great selection of his tracks, and played almost the entire Walking in the Green Corn album, which had everyone singing along throughout. It was a wonderful show and a great atmosphere.
Great show from Grant-Lee Phillips and a surprise cameo from Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket).
Grant-Lee played a very diverse setlist of new and older music (from Grant Lee Buffalo). Grant-Lee and Glen sang Paul Simon's American Tune.
Lots of crowd interaction and he even took a couple of requests - including mine for Rock of Ages (which he launched into immediately after my request).
Great show from a master lyricist and musician who is greatly under appreciated!
Super nice guy Grant Lee played an awesome pure sounding gig to the people of Malmo. We'd travelled from Edinburgh to see him and were not disappointed. He played a two hour set in an intimate venue, giving his crowd pleasing tunes the deserved airing! Still as tuneful and melodic as his early grant Lee Buffalo days, but with an element of softer maturity of today! Highly recommend!
Grant-Lee was funny, warm, and engaging as he interspersed jokes and anecdotes with a wide variety of songs, old and new. For his encore he took requests from an enthusiastic and knowledgeable audience, and even managed to hit some of his falsetto riffs.
Great concert! See him live if you can.
Excellent show, intimate and preaching to the converted, but some decent newer songs (better live than recorded) and cracking versions of old favourites. Brilliant finish with Ashes to ashes, too. Borderline is what it is, poor drinks with okay service, only one bad drunk twat.
Amazing show. Grant-Lee Phillips exceeded all my expectations. I’m been a fan since ‘93 so this was an extra special treat. Mingling with the crowd before and after the show made it feel so intimate and personal. Incredible!
