Dance Gavin Dance formed in 2005 out of a band called Farewell Unknown that had run its course. Lead guitarist Will Swan, drummer Matt Mingus and bassist Eric Lodges recruited screamer Jonathan Mess, and singer Jonny Craig to join the band.
Unsure to this day as to where they got their name from, they booked a show under the name Dance Gavin Dance with the hope of getting around to changing it but it unfortunately didn’t happen in the end and the name stuck. They released their first EP with this line up entitled, “Whatever I Say Is Royal Ocean” which was re released when the band signed to Rise Records. It was after the reception of this record that they began to write their debut full length album “Downtown Battle Mountain”
They released their debut full-length album on May 15th 2007, through Rise Records and then began their first national tour with Alesana and A Day to Remember. Unfortunately, counter tenor singer, Jonny Craig quit the band in November of that year, and was not allowed to rejoin when he asked if he could due to large tensions with other members. It was Kurt Travis who would later become their lead singer, who was formerly fronting a band called Five Minute Ride.
They went back into the studio to record their sophomore album, “Dance Gavin Dance” which was released on August 19th 2008, but before it was released, Jonathan Mess and Eric Lodge left the band. Will Swan took the reigns of the band and journeyed on.
All of the drama aside with the numerous line up changes, they have maintained a solid reputation as a Scream/Funk/Soul band with tendencies to be experimental, leaping from genre to genre. Will Swan has developed an instantly recognizable and distinctive style of playing over the years and they also still have original members, Matt Mingus on drums and Jon Mess on what they describe as “unclean vocals”.

Depending on your outlook, you’ll probably find the name Dance Gavin Dance either amusing or irritating, but it hasn’t stopped the Sacramento outfit from carving out a near ten year long career at this point, over the course of which they’ve proven no slouches in the recording studio; album number five, Acceptance Speech, dropped last year, and it’s that prodigious work ethic that’s helped them on their way to carving out a dedicated cult fanbase. Their post-hardcore sound isn’t necessarily anything new on the face of it, but it’s the way in which they’ve subtly, carefully weaved experimental aspects into their style over the years that’s really set them apart from some of their peers. Not that they’ve necessarily strived to keep their contemporaries at arm’s length; quite the opposite, in fact, with the band having taken part in the Warped Tour in both 2009 and 2011. Since Acceptance Speech dropped, they’ve toured more frequently in their own right, playing an epic UK tour last May that took in twelve towns - all the usual suspects, plus unusual spots like Rugby and Margate. They’re heading back into the studio late this year, so expect the chance to catch one of their riotous live shows to present itself again at some point in 2015.
Dance Gavin Dance may seem to be a slightly misleading name for a hard rock outfit. Those who have come for an EDM electro party may leave disappointed, but those who have come to see aggressive and passionate rock music are sure to leave in a sense of elation.
The quintet has been working as a band for just under a decade yet the acclaim of their music has spread globally and now they have no issues packing out venues. Lead singer Jon Mess thrives off the size of the crowd and no matter how many people stand before him, he is intent to invade their personal space and give the gig a sense of basement intimacy whilst aggressively shouting the lyrics to 'Tree Village'.
Mess launches himself from side to side of stage whilst the supporting musicians tear apart fan favourite 'Honey Revenge' and the crowd jump with their hands raised high. By the final tones of 'Uneasy Hearts Weigh The Most' it is difficult to decide who has given more energy from the sweating red faces of both performers and patrons.
Saw Dance Gavin Dance for the first time live. Been to enough shows and edm festivals to kill a horse. Camp Bisco 4 times, electric forest, Ultra twice, Gathering of the Vibes Twice; mysteryland, ezoo... too many festivals I can make an exhaustive list. Those festivals I just named are the tip of the ice burg... DGD was the best show I’ve ever been to. Here’s their set list from Westbury Theater on June 5th:
Frozen One
Betrayed By The Game
Midnight Crusade
Alex English
Chucky vs The Giant Tortoise
Carl Barker
Summertime Gladness
Flossey Dickey Bounce
Care
We Own The Night
Man Of The Year
Then they encored with:
Inspire The Liars
Lemon Meringue Tie
I couldn’t ask for more. Thank You DGD
Straight up killer performance. They are just as talented on stage as they are in the studio. I didn't expect Tillian's voice to reach the range it does on the albums, but he proved me wrong. His vocal performance was something else Couple that with their awesome stage presence to get the crowd hyped made an awesome night. I would definitely see them again. My only complaint would be that at some times the sound production was a bit muddy. It was hard to pick out the individual instruments and a little hard to hear some of the guitar riffs well. That might have been out of their control though. It still sounded great. Other than that, one of the best concerts I've been to. If you're a fan, you need to go.
If you are a fan of Dance Gavin Dance's music and haven't seen them live yet, must at some point! This was my second time seeing them; I saw them first a year ago in Brighton, MA, and then last night in Cambridge, MA. At both shows they've sounded incredible live, have great energy on stage, and are the type of band/musicians who never play a long enough set list no matter how many songs they play. These guys played songs that spanned 4, maybe 5 albums and they all sounded great. I highly recommend seeing them play whenever you get the opportunity to!
I saw the guys at Warped 2017 in Shakopee, MN (A suburb of Minneapolis) and lemme tell you: No one can rock a 30 minute set like these guys. From fan favorites like Lemon Merengue Tie, to their new single Summertime Gladness, they kept the crowd moving and and into the music with impressive skill. The stage set up was great too, and Tilian has amazing stage presence while Will and Matt kept the energy up with their skilled playing. Can't wait to see them at Northern Invasion 2018!
The show was amazing line up was great!! DGD shows are some of the best ever! Along with strawberry girls, A lot like birds, and slaves, these bands went well with DGD and at then when these bands vocalists came in the end to share a mic with DGD it was lit af!!! Great pits show was just intense !! Going to the next!! \m/
Excellent show. Setup for the last act (DGD) took a bit of time though. Enough so that people in the crowd started to get agitated. I also wish DGD, had done signing, but they are quite busy, so I understand. Got to meet Don Broco and Covet. It was an awesome performance, despite the subpar venue.
This concert has been the best one I've been to ever. Getting to experience seeing this band alongside the other amazing bands showed me what it is to have a good time. The bands were interactive, and best of all dgd hit the hearts of many people including myself. I say go! Have fun! And rock on
Amazing show! No one brings the crowd alive like Dance Gavin Dance, and this show proved it. I was expecting DGD to sound "meh" live, but they completely blew me away. The energy all band members bring, coupled with their incredible music, made an amazing graduation gift. 10 out of 10.
