“When you know the one you’re with is bad for you but you’re too scared to quit.
You say: ‘I love you, I don’t want to lose you…’
And they wear their crown of shit, upon their liar's chair, while leeching off your devotion.”
(Austra, 2020)
Katie Austra Stelmanis has been better known by her middle name for three albums, ten years, and countless tours. She wrote, produced, and performed all her own records, occasionally sharing the spotlight with a band to tour live. From the outside, things were going really well for a while: she built a devoted fan base and sold out shows all around the world. However, on the inside, Stelmanis was beginning to feel stagnant and uninspired. “I was losing faith in my own ideas,” she explains. Without realising it, she’d got caught up in a toxic relationship that was tearing her apart.
It wasn’t until Stelmanis was ready to face her insecurities that she was able to see a way forward: “My creative and personal relationships were heavily intertwined, and I knew the only answer was to part ways with all of the people and comforts that I’d known for the better part of a decade and start again.” Alongside making changes in her personal life, starting again also meant taking an entirely different approach to making a record. New single “Risk It” is her first new music since 2017 and marks a new chapter for Austra.

Innovative electro ensemble Austra put on quite a show when a few friends and I want along to see them perform.
All of us were hugely impressed by classically trained Stelmanis’ soft yet piercing voice, and although we didn’t know very many of their songs, we found that it was all to easy to bob and groove along to the vast majority of the songs that the band played.
The sombre tone that her vocals strike gives rise to an effective sense of tension between her voice and the upbeat synth driven instrumental parts of their tracks. The exaggerated build up of ‘What We Done?’ was a great way to open proceedings, but their most popular song to date, ‘Lose It’ was definitely the track that was best received by the audience. Austra’s 2013 album ‘Olympia’ is certainly worth a listen, and if you can get to one of their shows any time soon I would definitely recommend it! The band’s subtle and infectious sounds make for a great evening out!
Austra has an other-worldly ability to translate what could be a very standard live performance set into something more dramatic and operatic. I have seen Austra many times and this performance holds true to their past sets. The played the perfect mix of songs from all albums and gave us a special treat with their latest single - Habitat. Katie's vocals paired with the heavy synth and digital influence of the track made it the clear highlight of my evening. As you would expect their encore packed in more drama and lyrical magic with Maya's solo drum intro leading into an acoustic track from their upcoming EP. Can't wait to get lost in another one of their shows in the future. If you have never seen them live, you should treat yourself to this arty, and very talented band.
This band never disappoints and their following has grown tremendously over the past few years. Last time I saw them in Dallas the venue, Trees, was packed but only a handful of people were able to sing along. Now,the whole audience sang along like a choir. No matter when they perform you feel the music deep inside and can't help but dance and rave. You know how some concerts are described as a religious experience? That is Austra!
Awesome show! Great lighting and visual effects. The music was stellar and lead singer' voice amazing as usual. She was wearing fabulous yellow velvet 70's top with matching pants. Keyboard player was wearing an equally fun outfit. They were dressed for the occasion and they turned the Exit/In into a dance party. So glad they came to Nashville! I will jump at the chance to see them again.
Exactly what I had anticipated! Her voice is even better live than on recording. Perfect pitch and threw in so many variants of notes just to switch up what you would hear in the recordings. They also threw much more of a house vibe into the show. Great to finally see them live and in such an intimate setting. Would definitely see again.
Enjoyed the show in Zurich last night! Great songs, voice and performance. But Austras band mates were in a strange mood and the seemed like they needed some cheering up... in a small venue like the mascotte in zurich the mood of the band is essential and visible to the audience. one smile towards the audience wouldnt hurt...
Austra was amazing. With the fog and the stage lighting behind her giving this mysterious vibe and her strong vocals to follow suit it was quite a captivating concert which I had no expectations of enjoying as much as I did. It was a pleasent surprise. Shame there weren't more people to enjoy it.
Super concert, très bon moment dans une très bonne salle.
Très bon son, l'ambiance était au rendez-vous!
Hâte de revoir le groupe en concert.
Très bonne première partie avec Pixx également.
I have not seen Austra in concert but want too! I am in Vermont so if you could come to Boston again, I could see you. I listen to Austra all the time and have other people addicted to the music.
Austra is such a cool band.
The show was amazing, the mood they create is just so special.
Love them. The place was awesome too, the light and everything.
They need to make more show in EU!!
