I know La Vela since their 2nd album but they never played in Quito, where I come from. So when I heard they were playing in Germany where I live right know it was kind of a MUST to go to the concert.
The place where they played in Cologne was a "small" place but it was that what did the hole experience so special. When we arrived to place were the concert was taking place and we found the members of the band smoking on the entry and talking to each other and to the people that were there. So from the beginning on you felt in a more familiar atmosphere and part of something and not just part of the crowd.
And then the crazyness began. The started the concert with the songs of the new album and the rythm scaleted gradually from song to song. Then they started to play some of old songs where people just start jumping and singing together. There was no moment where the people stayed stil and not moving. Even when they took a break after 1 hour of concert, people were cheering " vamos vamos la vela, vamos la vela de mi corazon". For the second part of the concert the old songs were the protagonists. People were singing along and jumping energic for 2:30 hours concert. It was AMAZING! The band gave eerything on stage and picked up the right songs to make the audience happy.
After the concert you could find the band outside drinking beer cheering with the people.
I can only recommend the band to everyone. Even if you are not spanish speaker your feet wont stay stil any moment.
La Vela Puerca have proved that when it comes to music their is NO! language barrier. Attending a concert of theirs with a friend of mine fluent in Spanish, I did not have a clue what to expect, she did mention they were a band from Uruguay and had SIX! successful albums, but I had no idea every song would be in Spanish, this unsettled me. The band strutted on stage, my feet clamped to the ground as the only Spanish I knew was from watching Dora the explorer and i'm pretty sure the phrase 'Swiper no swiping' is pretty English..... and that most certainly would not help me, but then they started playing, and boy was my mind changed! The band consists of actual musicians! not hiding behind machinery or technology, no! each member played a live instrument; Saxophone, trumpet, Guitar etc it was magnificent! I felt as if I were at a festival as audience members had their faces painted with symbols and logos and all mannerisms of shapes, I felt as if I should have done research and tried hard enough because the performance was nothing but fun. The band interacted with the audience, although I had no clue what was being said I'm sure it was the funniest thing in the world. I would advise anybody to go and watch La Vela Puerca, even if you don't speak Spanish the sounds and the voices of the band will do all the translating you can imagine.
It was amazing, the light work was very good, the sound and the place were beautiful. The band that played before LA Vela Puerca was epic, I never expected it to surprise me as much as it did
