  • The Posies

Friday 19th October, the Garage, London, the Posies. So some 25 years since we last saw them it’s the London leg of The Posies 30th Anniversary tour. Celebrating this landmark event and the rerelease of the seminal nineties albums, Dear 23, Frosting on the Beater and Amazing Disgrace we are joined by an audience mainly of a certain age who were around first time around.

The early start due to the Friday club night caught a few people out but the venue soon filled out after a few minutes.

There’s no easy into the set for the band who launch into a stellar version of ‘Dream all Day’ with Messrs Auer and Stringfellow cutting the shapes and leaping around the stage like men half their age. And they can still land on the beat too. Joined this time around by Dave Fox on bass, amazing suit, and Mike Musberger on drums constantly twiddling, spinning and throwing his sticks around without missing a beat.

The bulk of the set comes from the three albums above but there’s a special mention for Dear 23’s legendary producer John Leckie who’s in the audience tonight. Its non-stop action with no song outstaying its welcome and the between song banter is amusing and self-deprecating. A couple of guests join the band tonight with a member of the audience joining the band on drums for ‘Going going gone’ and pretty good his was too plus the quirky support act Anna Wolf adding some backing vocals on a couple of tracks from the under rated Blood/Candy.

Proving they are just not a nostalgia act transporting us back twenty five years but still keeping guitar based rock alive, they’ve got the songs, they’ve still clearly got the energy and they’ve got the licks too.

Highlights for me probably ‘Daily Mutilation’, ‘Please Return it’ and of course ‘Solar Sister’ before the epic punk encores of ‘Grant Hart’, Song #1 and ‘Burn and Shine’ bring us all to a breathless crescendo as we are chucked out into the balmy autumnal evening in North London.

A great night from a band who prove they are still a force to live with competing with any young upstarts in the rock scene.

Until the next time keep on rockin y’all

  • You might not know the name instantly, but The Posies are a staple of US indie rock. The band’s two main members, Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow, alongside their own band’s work, have contributed to the likes of Fountains of Wayne, The Minus 5, R.E.M. and Big Star either as members or on production duties. If there’s a jangle to the guitar sound, those two are likely to have been in the room. The band’s high water mark came back in 1993 when Frosting on the Beater became a surprising hit album thanks to the trio of singles ‘Dream All Day’, ‘Solar Sister’ and the ironic (especially given the MTV-heavy rotation of it) ‘Flavor of the Month’. The band never quite reached those heights again and drifted apart, before returning in 2001 with new music and an urge to tour. Auer and Stringfellow are the stars of the show and their charming jangle has only been enhanced during their stint as part of the now sadly-defunct Big Star so the chiming guitars and melodies of the aforementioned trio of songs are undimmed by time, and it’s a professional show from start to end – no surprise given the chops these guys have. Yes, it’s a touch retro at times but all that is left behind as you’ll get swept up in the sugary sweet rush of classic indie rock.

  • I had heard some of their music as a kid growing up in the 90's but never really paid much attention. They were so much fun! Their chemistry together is just great. Felt like a little time machine at their show :) Obviously they've aged but they have not slowed down. They were super humble and grateful to be able to celebrate 30 years of their band with fans. Good time.

  • Fantastic show! Sweetwater Music Hall was a great space. The Posies exceeded my expectations. The final song Coming Right Along was a perfect way to end the set and Jon and Ken were happy to chat with fans after the show and sign merch. Cant wait to see them again!

  • The posies are a fantastic band. Having attended 2 gigs, 22 years apart, revealed no sign of energy loss, tunefulness or vitality. I would highly recommend a Posies gig! a few more words as reviews need to be more than 30 words long. why i wonder...why?

  • Seen the Posies endlessly in the 90s whenever they came down to Olympia. They were my favorite band then,I liked them far better than Nirvana!

I’m excited to be able to see them again up in Bellingham where I live now.
