They are 4 and all dressed in black. During this tour the band is joined by Esya (Ayse Hassan) as a bassist, standing between the original duo.
Ayse has a messy hair-do and she is definitely the most interesting of the 4 on stage. Laura is quite still and concentrated on her performance.
A young guy with bleached hair takes care of the electronic part and supports the drummer Steven Ansell with the rhytmic part.
Steven looks often to the audience and it is quite cool to watch him play.
The first song on their set was Elijah.
The electronic base starts, then Laura Mary Carther stars with one single note of her guitar.
When the rest of the band follows up it’s an explosion of sound.
Ayse is obviously enjoying being part of the band and dances and moves a lot while playing. Steven is very concentrated.
The base continues with a registered keyboard with acute notes.
Then Laura starts to sing with a slightly raucous voice.
The intro guitar with its single note is the part that I miss more in the second Verse.
The subject of the song is biblical. Elijah was a prophet living under the reign of Ahab.
During the chorus the band uses strobo-lights, it is a strong sensorial experience.
Steven introduces each song with its name.
Mexican Dress plays with the repetitive bass and guitar lines. It is entertaining to see Laura’s and Esya’s fingers moving so rapidly and never missing a bet.. It’s a song about someone who just wants to be the center of all attention. It is not the best song of the set.
God Complex has the most interesting distorted guitar line. The volume is super high and I’m very happy to have earplugs.
Eye to Eye is a much slower song. Again not of the best of the set.
In Bangsar the roles change and Steven starts to sing. It is the most entertaining song of the set.
Colours Fade is the last song of the set and I kind of feel like I’m done with the band now.
A Blood Red Shoes concert can go one of two ways. It can be inside a small bar, where it is sure to be immensely crowded, or it can be outdoors, during a festival, where it is sure to be immensely crowded. I guess the location doesn't matter; there are going to be a lot of people dancing about, jumping around and screaming out loud.
Laura-Mary Carter and Steven Ansell are the only members of the band. What they lack in personnel, though, they make up for in sound. They are an extremely energetic garage rock band with an extremely energetic fan base. Their music is made for these people. High energy, high intensity, and low inhibitions rock. There is no need to be afraid here. There is no need to fit in. At a Blood Red Shoes concerts, there is no need to care what others think. You are free to be whoever you want. Now we get to the band themselves. They dress like any other rock band these days does. Casual clothing, sometimes with a little flair for kicks. Laura-Mary sometimes wears nice tops with a simple pencil skirt, and Steven dresses in simple t-shirts and pants. Not only can they produce loud music, they do it was a very energetic attitude, and their audience reciprocates.
The suppporting act wasn't that good.
But Blood Red Shoes was great.
Glad they are back!
The setlist was well weighted.
And the sound sounded sound.
And when does a review doesn't get too short?
Damn! what a show, what an energy. I had almost forgotten how good they are. It has been a while since they were last in Amsterdam, but i will definitely be there when they come back in november.
Amazing. It was just a great show. Absolutely polished, great performance, with a lot of confidence.
Played all the bangers, new and old. Great atmosphere. Good times were had by all!
