Born on January 8th 1976, Lewis started her professional career as an actress - her first role was in a Jell-O commercial! She went on to act in small roles on TV shows including Baywatch and The Golden Girls, and starred in many made-for-TV teen movies. Deciding that music was her true passion, Lewis formed indie band Rilo Kiley in 1998 with her friends Pierre De Reeder, Dave Rock and Blake Sennett. The band gained the attention of Warner Bros records who signed them for the release of their debut album “More Adventurous”, which was released in 2004. One of the more well-known songs on the album is “Portions for Foxes” which was a big hit for the band. Rilo Kiley’s second album “Under the Blacklight” was released in 2007, however four years later in July 2011, the band announced their split.
Lewis had been working on solo material whilst she was in Rilo Kiley and in 2004 she was invited by Conor Oberst (of the band Bright Eyes) to record a solo album on his record label Team Love. Her debut solo album “Rabbit Fur Coat” was released in January 2006 and showcased a different kind of sound for Lewis – she described the album herself as “a kind of soul record”. The album featured many guest appearances and contributions from other musicians, including Oberst, M Ward, James Valentine (guitarist of Maroon 5) and Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie.
Lewis also collaborated with The Watson Twins, who provided accompaniment and toured with Lewis in support of her album three times in 2006. The twins also appeared with her band on several live TV appearances, including Late Show with David Letterman and Later with Jools Holland. Lewis’ second album “Acid Tongue” (released in 2008) was however Watson Twin-free.
Lewis’ third album “The Voyager” was released in 2014. The album took five years to complete and is a personal reflection on the break up Rilo Kiley and her father’s death. The lead single from the album “Just One of the Guys” was accompanied by a star-studded video, with appearances from Anne Hathaway, Kristen Stewart, Brie Larson and Tennessee Thomas.
As well as performing in Rilo Kiley and as a solo artist, Lewis performs as part of a duo with her boyfriend Johnathan Rice, under the apt name of Jenny and Johnny. The pair released their first single together in 2010 entitled “Scissor Runner”, followed by their album “I’m Having Fun Now”.
Lewis has played at festivals such as the Newport Folk Festival, Lollapalooza, Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival, the 2014 iTunes Festival in London and at the Austin City Limits Music Festival. She was also the supporting act for Snow Patrol in 2009, also appearing at V Festival in Australia that same year. One of her most notable collaborations is with Brandon Flowers (of The Killers) on his 2010 album “Flamingo”, where she lend her vocals on the song “Hard Enough”. Most recently in 2014, Lewis collaborated with Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend on an exclusive track for TV network HBO, to be used on the programme “Girls”. The track is titled “Completely Not Me” and was featured in the Season 3 premiere of the show. It’s safe to say that Jenny Lewis is one busy bee!

Having been a fan of Jenny Lewis/Rilo Kiley for seven years now, and with nine great albums to her name, was i ever going to be disappointed with seeing her live for the first time? Very probably not. Was she better than i expected? Yes i think she was! Have been listening to her new album, The Voyager, a lot recently, and while maybe not quite as good as the first three Rilo Kiley albums, is still an excellent pop/rock album. Plenty of great songs, lots of hooks and as ever great story telling.
The gig was sold out, and the small venue tightly packed which always helps create a good atmosphere. I wasn't sure what to expect from the gig, would it just be songs from her solo albums? She answered that question with the first song, an excellent version of Rilo Kiley's Silver Lining, my night was made already. The band split years ago and i had given up hope of ever hearing any of their stuff live. From then on it was great song after great song, most of the new album, songs from the other two solo albums, and a few Rilo Kiley classics too. Highlights for me Slippery Slopes from the new album and Rise Up With Fists. Her band played and looked great all in white, and Jenny's voice was spot on. They went off after just over an hour of great music. The encore was pretty special for me, a great version of With Arms Outstretched, a Rilo favourite of mine, followed by the great Acid Tongue, and the latest single She's Not Me.All in all a great gig, and 90 mins of music heaven for me.
If you haven't listened to or seen Jenny Lewis live, do your ears a massive favour and do so!!
Jenny Lewis has an amazing voice that can hold an entire crowd in suspense during her great hits like "Happy" and "You Are What You Love". We were all captivated by her stories and the way she portrayed the emotions in each and every one of her songs.
I loved her on the piano especially during Godspeed! She is so talented in so many ways, but I really appreciate her dedication to writing beautiful melodies to accent her natural singing. She even played a few songs from her time singing for Rilo Kiley. The band was great as well, with tons of awesome backup instruments that you don't really see in many sets these days. They didn't overdo any of the songs with production or synthetic sounds, offering a great, pure folk experience.
Jenny Lewis really knows how to accent her guitar chords with beautiful chimes and bass lines. There weren't too many special effects at the show, but there was a good light show that went along with the music. The focus was really on Jenny, though, and her great solo work. The crowd was very polite so we could really enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience. I definitely recommend seeing her live, you'll love her!
I have been a fan since before her solo career, the Rilo Kiley days. This was the second time I have seen her live and hopefully there will be a third.
The opening act, while comically bad, said Jenny Lewis may be the bridge between creatively genuine indie music and the compromised world of pop. It might be a little sanctimonious but it might be right. Her style has grown and broadened with non-threatening complex music supporting her relatable yet emotionally relevant lyrics. And she is just fun, fun to listen to and fun to watch. She still enjoys what she does.
Her set included a whimsical design and a setlist that pleased her old and new fans. Her banter was good but I personally could have used a little more. It was sparse. She played a great encore set but I was left still wanting more.
In short, go see her at least once. You won't regret.
Incredible show. The staging of an entire album isn't something I've seen done before and was cool but I would've preferred some history/background/insight into how they came together as a group or how a certain song came about peppered through that part of the performance. The second half was great and full of audience interaction. She had the whole place under a spell with her voice. Shout out too to her band which were chameleons with her and totally rocked!
EZTV was perfectly adequate but instantly forgettable.
She never disappoints! Always an amazing, fine-tuned performance. She mixes up the song choice and figures out new ways to perform each with idiosyncratic harmonies and pitch changes as well as updating some lyrics for a fun, cheeky wink. Great to see her with The Watson Twins and M. Ward, and looking forward to her new music that we got a little taste of. If she can sell out 3 nights at The Beacon maybe they should consider Madison Square next!
Jenny Lewis was everything I'd hoped for and more! I've been a fan for years, but was never able to get to a show. After moving to LA, I got to see her at The Wiltern in her home town. Her voice was flawless, even better live. This was a fantastic show to be my first, because she brought Nate out to do A Man/Me/Then Jim. So perfect! And Tig Notaro opened with a short set.
Can't wait to see her again!
Jenny Lewis killed it in SLC! I've wanted to see her for years, and this show was well worth the wait. She played a lot of popular older stuff from her Rilo Kiley days, as well as some new stuff from her new band, NAF and from her Voyager album. Every song was beautiful, she absolutely rocked. I'd go see her again in a heartbeat.
An amazing performance! The musicianship was tight and the performance was engaging. Older favorites were intertwined into the new album - giving everyone a little bit of what they were looking for. My 16-year-old son wasn't familiar with Lewis but is now a lifelong fan after this great show.
Always amazing seeing Jenny Lewis live! Lots from the new album and lots of reworked versions of classic tracks from her solo career and a few gems from the Rilo Kiley days. Fun stage banter and tight as hell band. Don’t think about it - go see Jenny Lewis and enjoy.
As anticipated the show was SO good. Her voice is amazing and she looked beautiful. The audience was very into it - singing along. Would have loved to have heard a bit more Rilo Kiley or older Jenny Lewis, maybe even some new N.A.F. but overall a great show! Love her!
