The band started life in 2005, after former neighbours Tyler Glenn (vocals, keyboards) and Chris Allen (guitar, vocals) moved from Southern California to Provo, Utah. Later, Branden Campbell (bass guitar, vocals) and Elaine Bradley (drums, percussion, vocals) joined, forming the four piece act. All the members of Neon Trees are part of the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-day Saints, with their religious beliefs being a significant influence in their lyrical content.
Neon Trees were given their big break after The Killers' drummer, Ronnie Vanucci Jr. went to see the band play. Impressed, the drummer from The Killers chose the band to support them on a number of dates during their 2008 North American tour, exposing Neon Trees yo a whole host of new fans and listeners.
The band released their debut album on Mercury/Def Jam records in 2010, titled "Habits." The release was a moderate success, with their lead single "Animal" featured as the Itunes free single of the week. With a performance on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' and the 'Tonight Show with Jay Leno' they gained further exposure, gaining more fans in the process.
Their brand of disco rock which collides with radio-friendly new wave has a definite David Bowie influence, featuring many mainstream-friendly hooks that entice the listener. Their single, "Everybody Talks" was a popular hit from their second album "Picture Show" (2012) and featured on a number of television programs.
In 2014, Neon Trees released "Pop Psychology," their third studio album, which was a more polished affair, with "Sleeping With a Friend" becoming a popular hit. Lead singer Glenn came out publicly as gay before the album was released, making the record all the more poignant, revealing a sense of soul searching that seemed to be a prominent theme throughout the album.

This was my fourth time seeing the Neon Trees live. I just can't get enough of these guys. Each time is a trip back into a time machine of hip 80's dance rock party! The lead singer, Tyler comes out through a cloud of smoke, like he's walking through an old MTV music video. The band starts to play and immediately the whole crowd begins to jump in excitement. Tyler narrates the storyline of their set list, blending the show together seamlessly. You find yourself rocking out with the strangers next to you, who you become instant friends with through your mutual love for a fantastic musical experience that Neon Trees bring to you with every second of their engaging performance. The band sound just like the record - even better - and the whole show starts to feel like a transformative experience with art pop references. The lyrics are infused with humour and modern culture, from finding love on the internet to exploring a love that is dangerous and fun all at the same time. Guitars are heavy with danceable hooks, drums are beating to the sound of your heart, bass is making you break a sweat, and fuzzy synth keyboards pulsate into a pop rock frenzy that runs through your veins. Tyler always crowd surfs during "Sleeping With A Friend". I was one of the lucky fans who got to pass him along! He speaks for the whole band when he starts to tell the audience how grateful they are to be able to perform their music. But really, it is the other way around. You'll be grateful that Neon Trees is making the kind of infectious music that enables you to be yourself and celebrate the songs that seem to narrate every moment of your life.
The Neon Trees concert was amazing! One of the best shows I've ever been to, hands down. My sister and I were very lucky to be in the front row. To start off the show a large white curtain covered the stage and about halfway through the first song it dropped to reveal the band. Tyler (the main singer) was dressed in a pink suit with a neon yellow fur coat until he twirled it off. He was absolutely electric! From start to finish he was jumping around the stage, standing on his toes, kicking his feet over his head, and holding hands of some of the audience members. At one point he even crowd surfed! The drummer Elaine joined Tyler to perform two songs, which were amazing. The music was very loud and fun, everyone in the crowd was jumping around, waving their arms, and singing to the music. They played songs from all their albums and about halfway through the show, Tyler sat down at the edge of the stage and gave an emotional and powerful speech about why he sings and how grateful he was for the opportunity to do what he does. He was very sincere and he looked as if he was having just as much fun as everyone in the crowd. One of the guitarist Branden gave both my sister and I a guitar pick and at the end of the show he, and the other members of the band threw their picks and drum sticks into the crowd after their final bow. Overall it was completely worth it and I would go see Neon Trees again.
I adore the Neon Trees. I actually heard their song "Everybody Talks" on a commercial for Pandora, and I had to find out who they were. Once I did, I started listening to the rest of their music and I was so pleased.
They do have a nice variety in their songs, and I have to say that overall they have a very positive vibe. Their music addresses everything from the serious to the seemingly nonsensical, and it's very lyrical and easy to enjoy.
They're out of Murietta, California and have been playing together since 2005. They're fairly new on the scene and I hope they have staying power.
I had the chance to hear them at the House of Blues in Atlantic City recently, and it was fantastic. They didn't bring a lot of flash and glam for visual stimulation; rather they grabbed the audience by their incredible brand of rock.
They played a lot of songs in the set that weren't well known, as well as a few crowd-pleasers. Since it was at the House of Blues the audience was widely varied, and all seemed to enjoy the performance. Hearing them live is a "must-do" if the opportunity ever presents itself.
One of the very best live bands I've seen - period. They always put on a fantastic, high energy show that leaves me wishing I could do it all over again. Having seen Neon Trees in a variety of venues of different sizes over the years, I'd say this show at the Granada Theater might be my favorite. The size of the venue lends an intimacy to the show that gives the impression you're at a party with your closest friends. That's always the way you want to see your favorites. Keep doing what you're doing - we love it!
