Le Youth is the stage name of Wes James, an Ohio born, L.A based D.J who is living proof that one great song can make a career faster than it’s ever been able to before. Having been a complete music obsessive from a young age, it was only a matter of time until the young James started making music himself. He started out as a drummer, and he played in bands all throughout his early teenage years, but only started truly creating music as a songwriter in high school. As time went on he started dabbling in electronica, creating his signature style that debuted in 2012 when he put his track “C.O.O.L” on his soundcloud page. Two hundred thousand listens later and he’d earned himself a record deal with Ultra Records and the first steps toward a devoted fan following.
Since then, he’s set himself apart from the harsh, noisy techno that dominates the EDM scene today by producing serene, accesible music that’s still eminently danceable. “C.O.O.L” was released as an E.P and charted in the top 30 of the English, Scottish and Danish singles charts and his follow up “"Dance with Me" hurtled into the number 11 spot on the U.K Charts. He’s an artist with the world at his feet and he’s done it on almost entirely his own terms, and for that he comes highly recommended.
“I keep it simple and just describe it as Dance music. For the people that require some sort of reference point, I describe it as Dance music inspired by ‘90s House and R&B, which typically confuses them.” So says Wes James, who you’ll know better as one of the hottest new dance music talents around, Le Youth. You won’t be confused for long though because his mixture of wide smile inducing reworkings of 90′s dance are a joy to behold. You’ll definitely know ‘C O O L‘ (which is built on a sample of Cassie’s ‘Me & You‘), with its relaxed grooves making it the song which defined the sound of 2013. And when you go to his live show you’re in for more of the same: the 90′s influence is there but the way he brings it all together means it’s never mere nostalgia. He also makes sure he brings the party, from Aaliyah’s ‘Rock The Boat’ through to R. Kelly’s ‘Bump & Grind’ – and the fact that he samples ‘No Scrubs’ on his own ‘Dance With Me’ single shows he has exquisite 90s taste. Never too try hard and never taking himself too seriously his shows are just unadulterated fun. Go Jump around, get sweaty, dance like it’s 1999.
