I’m writing today as someone who came of age right around the time of the great mainstream boom of Indie Rock of the mid 2000’s. Not only that, but also as someone who went back and discovered most things Britpop had to offer as a direct result. With this in mind dear reader it’s been something of a given to me that if I see a bunch of skinny guys with Fender guitars and fringes to die for, I automatically assume they’re going to sing about something that I can directly relate to or at the very least sing something I can understand. So hopefully you can understand my confusion when confronted with Tocotronic, the most British band to ever hail from Germany. Hailing from Hamburg and forming in 1993, Tocotronic were, fortunately enough, a good enough band all around to set my mind at ease almost immediately after the initial shock, and what really made me fall for them absolutely was their live show. The easy chemistry of 21 years of touring and general experience makes it obvious that one’s watching masters of their craft at work, so much so that it’s truly heartening to know that they’re one of the hottest names in German rock right now. Truly this is a band that, even if they might not sing in English, make music that can be loved the world over. Take a chance on them the next time you can, I can assure you, you won’t regret it!
