I’ll be honest I didn’t know what to expect from a Belgian indie band called Girls In Hawaii but the charming, tuneful set they played was more than a pleasant surprise. They’ve come a long way from recording demos on an 8 track, and now with albums that have charted all over Europe, they make for the perfect festival mainstay.
Their pleasant compositions are melodically rich, often featuring three part harmonies and counter melodies provided from the keyboards and guitars. They are not a flash act. They let their songs do all the talking for them and they are all the better for it. Their songs take on a new power in front of a crowd, even with their gentle delivery they are deeply moving and the crowd really gets a sense of the rich emotion behind the thick sound the band produce. Overall Girls In Hawaii make beautiful music that absolutely comes alive on the stage and they’re going to have me checking out more Belgian bands – there might be some more gems in there.
