Coming to prominence as a producer for fellow Detroit native Big Sean, Posner released his first record in 2009 with his “A Matter of Time” mixtape. Thanks to featuring on several of Sean's early tracks, Posner's mixtape attracted a lot of industry attention, especially considering it's unique method of free release on the iTunes U educational channel. In July 2009, while Posner was still in his junior year of university, he signed a record deal with J Records (a subsidiary of Sony and RCA) and for the next couple of years, he juggled touring commitments and recording with his work at Duke's University. He released another mixtape in October of the same year in the form of “One Foot Out The Door”, and then just under a year later, his debut album “31 Minutes To Takeoff” was released.
While Posner had a lot of hype going for him, no-one could have predicted just how successful he would become in such a short amount of time. His second single “Cooler Than Me” rocketed into the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 6, and was a top ten hit single in a further six countries across the globe. It was certified multi-platinum in both the US and Australia, and just like that, Mike Posner had arrived. He's since released a further two hit singles in the form of “Please Don't Go” and his Lil Wayne collaboration “Bow Chicka Wow Wow”, and his album was a top ten hit on the Billboard 200 off the back of those hits. It's fair to say that Posner has the world at his feet, and for his live shows and his addictive pop hits, he comes highly recommended.
Summer 2010, “Cooler Than Me” invaded the charts around the world with its inevitable catchy R&B vocals coupled with hip-hop electro beats, catapulted Mike Posner into the spotlight.
Having crafted his art whilst studying at University, he self-released his early material distributing it for free on iTunes which saw him immediately climb the top of the iTunes charts. Offered a deal by J Records in 2009, Posner signed vowing to finish his studies while recording his debut and touring on the weekends. His fresh sounding debut album “31 minutes to Takeoff” reached number eight in the US charts. Making use of 80’s influenced synths, dance-pop, r & b and elements of electronic music gave Posner his defining sound.
To support the release of his debut album, Posner joined 42 dates of Vans Warped Tour originally starting as a punk touring festival and now known for hosting pop-punk, alternative and rock bands. It’s no surprise why festival-goers would have been surprised by his addition to the line-up. Making it his mission to prove why he was on the tour, steadily Posner was able to win over fans with his infectious dance-pop with tracks like “Please Don’t Go” and the hit single “Cooler Than Me” which give you no choice but to jump along, or even two step to the more mellow tracks like “Gone In September” or “Save Your Goodbye”. Posner definitely knows how to work the crowd, serenading members of the audience with his smooth and alluring vocals.
Demonstrating he’s not a one trick pony. If his flawless recordings don’t have you at the word go, Posner will definitely change that when you see him live.
