In all the gigs I’ve seen, never has one man and a guitar had so much power over an audience as James Yorkston did last week. Between his delicately performed songs and humorous, conversational interludes, James had us eating out of the palm of his hand. His talent as a lyricist seems to know no bounds; every track James works on seems more beautiful than the last. James doesn’t need a fancy set-up, if anything it would detract from the tales he tells within his music. James’s latest album, The Cellardyke Recording And Wassailing Society, which came out in August is beautifully constructed. KT Tunstall appears on most of the album’s tracks; her voice plays beautifully with James’s lyrics. It was impossible not to notice the twinkle in James’s eye as he performed his new work last week. Everyone in that audience could tell how proud he was of this new collection of songs, and he absolutely deserved to be.
A James Yorkston gig is always a real treat, but with this new album on his hands I guarantee you’ll find the performances on this current tour extra special. I don’t want to ruin what James has in store for you, but pay attention to The Very, Very Best. It was the pinnacle performance for me, and something that will stay with me for quite some time.
