Biografia
The band was founded in the winter of 2002 by Chrigel Glanzmann, real name Christian as a studio project featuring different musicians guesting on different tracks. After Chrigel decided to make Eluveitie a real band instead of a personal project, he assembled nine other musicians, making it a full ten-piece band. The group's sound infuses traditional Celtic folk melodies with Gothenburg-styled melodic death metal and incorporates traditional folk instruments in their music, such as fiddles, tin whistles and flutes, bagpipes and hurry gurdies.
Shortly after the incarnation, the group performed its first shows as a unit including one at Swiss metal festival Elements of Rock, afterwards Eluveitie signed a contract with the Dutch record label Fear Dark, which released a re-recorded edition of their debut 'Vên' in 2004. However as the band's notoriety grew and became a full time commitment for the members, 7 of the 10 musicians left for various reasons leaving Chrigel Glanzmann, Sevan Kirder and Meri Tadić to carry on the project. They recruited six others, including Sevan Kirder's brother Rafi to play bass, making Eluveitie a nine-piece band.
In November 2007, Eluveitie signed a contract with record label Nuclear Blast. The new studio album 'Slania' (a girl's name that Chrigel saw on a 2500-year-old tombstone]) was released on February 15, 2008 and broke the top 40 charts in their homeland. They increased their chart success on every following release, moving slowly up the Swiss album charts before eventually topping it in 2014 with the LP 'Origins' which also charted worldwide in countries including France, Germany, Austria, The UK and the US Heatseekers Chart where it peaked at #1.

Eluveitie sets the stage looking like any other metal band that has played before, past or present. Then you realize there's a seductively dressed woman with a violin and things take a turn for the unknown.
Previously known for their folk metal, Eluveitie dials down the folk and gets to work blasting drum beats and heavy guitars. Lights flicker a black set with gray writing. A vocalist with long dreadlocks starts screaming and the crowd goes wild. Then, they break out the flutes and the drums slow down. Yes, it is possible to head bang with a flute!
Watching a performance by Eluveitie is like a roller coaster, and you'll find yourself eagerly awaiting the next surprise turn. Eight musicians fill up the stage with various instruments, from said violin player, to flutes, guitars a hurdy gurdy, bagpipes, and drums.
In February of 2014, Eluveitie was promoting their new album, Origins, at Chollerhalle Zug in their home country of Switzerland. Eluveitie tours all over the world from Japan to Australia and everywhere in between. Don't judge the typical stage set or the appearance of the musicians. They might be hard to catch but once you do, you will be in for a unique performance like you've never seen.
Heavy metal is often associated with fellow European cousin Sweden yet travel a few hundred miles south and you find Eluveitie in their native Switzerland. It is difficult to associate the serene and picturesque landscapes with the crunching guitars and huge sonar walls that the band creates. The inspiration must have come from elsewhere, as the band have often stated they looked towards Sweden and some of the metal greats when forming the band.
They are an intriguing and unique outfit due to the fact they incorporate celtic elements into both their lyricism and performance. The inclusion of bag pipes and other folk instruments may seem strange yet it all works together when taking to the stage. The group's lineup may have changed substantially since 2002 yet the current musicians work together well and throw themselves into the performance to entertain and enthuse the crowds for a solid twelve song set.
Eluveitie run the perfect folk metal concert. The crowd was driven to equal parts circle pits and (enthusiastic attempts at) jigs. From the moment each band member walked out on to the stage they had complete control of the room, and it seemed they barely took a moments respite for a solid two hours.
The acoustic instrumentation rung clear through the room over the driving force of electric guitars and vocals. And the acoustic sets were a powerful contrast that easily stood on their own. Call of the Mountains and Inis Mona were the standout songs from the night, with the former rousing the room midway through the set and the latter forming a much anticipated encore.
Their live performance pulls together all elements better than is possible in any recording. If you're a fan of Eluveitie's work, then it is no question that you will enjoy their concert.
While I was a bit disappointed not to see Epica, (best wishes for Simone!) all of the bands at the show certainly did their best to make up for it. Martina Edoff, who initially seemed a bit out of place on the tour, was awesome. The Agonist played a great set as well. Eluveitie was indescribably good. They played an epic set, the longest I've ever heard by far, to make up for U.S. missing out on Epica, without losing any energy or sound quality. Certainly one of the best shows I've seen. If you have a chance to see them, do it. \m/
Eluveitie was always my favourite folks death band since i first listen to their hits song inis mona about 12 years ago, and to be able to watch them live for the first time!it is an unforgetable experience and they are way kickass live on stage! Eluveitie always one of the best folk metal band so far! because they somehow put their music this vibe of nostalgic sense of how humans made their adventure story and add some proggresive energy tones!
Great concert, The Agonist was a good intro, but their sound was not top-notch, sounded muddled and confusing at times. Eluveitie was amazing. extra-long setlist. Lots of different tempos, great crowd, sufficient venue. They played from different albums, too bad Epica was not there, but the extra time was very good for Elu, they rocked.
Would headbang again.
Quite wonderful happening with strong celtic twist. I was amazed also with variety of instruments and their skills to play them.
Band's own reconstructed form of Gaulish language
(ref. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaulish_language) sounds wonderful.
Thank's for the band and I waiting next gig and new album.
pretty sick, the instrumentals and vocals are amazing, the sound was great in the small venue i was in and the audience was great and lively and it was just genuinely a good time! a couple cuts and bruises, but you don't come out of the wall of death completely unscathed when people are wearing big spiked things!
Cool scenography, intro, and a variety of instruments. But on music videos, they are singing very nice, sharing magic and mystery. Unfortunately, during the live show, they were just screaming and growling. Not my style. But Lacuna Coil and Infected Rain (from the same concert) were abslutely amazing!!!
