Biografia
If Duluth, Minnesota’s going to be famous for two things, then they might as well be really, really cool things. The first is that the critically acclaimed Netflix adaptation of the Coen Brothers film “Fargo” is set there. The second thing the small, snow covered town is famous for is being the birthplace of one of the folk scene’s most exciting new bands, Trampled By Turtles.
The band represents a different breed of country music altogether quite different from Mumford and Sons and The Lumineers, arguably the instigators and definitely the biggest names of the recent folk revival.
Both of those bands are essentially singer-songwriters backed by full bands. While Trampled By Turtles are for one, very much a single unit, for another they bring a much harder edged, speedier form of indie rock inflected bluegrass.
Their sound is all hectic banjos, groaning violins and furiously strummed mandolins. It’s quite ridiculously exciting to listen to and is even better live. The instrumentalism is uniformly impeccable, and the atmosphere of joyous abandon and cameraderie tops it all off.
This makes sense considering the how the band was formed. Each member began their music career in different rock bands, and once they got to know each other, they formed a folk side project together to cut loose and take a break from their day jobs.
This is a world where most forms of art seem to be forced to be grey and dour in order to be taken seriously. However, the sense of joy and passion that permeates everything this band does, not to mention the sheer quality of the songwriting and performance, makes them truly unmissable.

To see Trampled by Turtles live is to experience the best that American rock has to offer. They don’t use elaborate costumes, sets or crazy props. This is because they do not need to. An acoustic feast for the ears, they play fast and furious.
You could call Trampled by Turtles bluegrass but that would be a disservice to how hard they rock. Whether performing their original songs or a Pixies cover (Where Is My Mind) they absolutely fail to disappoint.
A standout part of the show is seeing Dave Carroll play the banjo so hard, you will wonder how it doesn’t catch on fire. But don’t take that as a slight on the rest of the band. They are all quite talented and don’t mind showing it.From the moment that they step on stage, you can see why Trampled by Turtles has such a devoted following. This is a crowd that gets into the music in a major way! While remaining respectful and kind, the folks that come out to see Trampled by Turtles have such a high level of energy that it is hard not to let it infect you. You will literally not be able to not move your body.
If you enjoy the Yonder Mountain String Band, Leftover Salmon or Men From Earth, you can’t go wrong with Trampled by Turtles.
Minnesota indie folk outfit Trampled by Turtles may have one of the best band names on the circuit, and a sound to match the strength of their namesake. Having recently achieved relative commercial success in the United States with the release of the last two albums, the group's fanbase has increased dramatically since they began gigging in the mid 00's.
The quintet has remained unchanged in a career spanning over ten years so the band has shared the highs, lows and every show together which makes them seem even more grateful when they play the big rooms and are treated to singalong by the devoted crowds to the blues grass choruses of 'Midnight on the Interstate'. They command attention all evening due to the passionate manner in which they pluck the strings of the various instruments onstage. The audience cheers along during bizarre folk breakdowns and extended instrumental bridges before the group complete these looking very pleased with themselves. A cover of Pixies' 'Where Is My Mind' reworked in their recognisable style closes a thoroughly enjoyable live show.
TBT was incredible...as usual. They played one long set of new mixed with old favorites. Loved it! Also loved seeing Dave after the show. He was gracious enough to pose for a selfie. Thanks Dave!
I only have two complaints: 1) I wanted it to last a little longer. I was disappointed when it was over at 10:30ish. 2)I wish people would stop talking throughout the entire show. Don't they know they can watch the show, later, at home? It's called a "couch show." Look it up. Please shut-up and dance, people. Your chatter is annoying to those of us who came to listen. That is all.
Sweetness!! Like most agree, TBT has vaulted into a crowd-friendly, high-level, multi-musically talented group.
Getting used to their CDs, its a necessity to see them live. Having the articulations with the beautiful banjo from Dave to the magjificant mandolin from Erik, far-out fiddle by Ryan, cunning cello from Eamonn, bangin' bass by Tim to the lead singer, Dave Simonett's great guitar and harmonizing harmonica...., TBT plays great music the crowd sings along with.
Beginnning as local Minnesota favorites, the Turtles have become nation-wide stars!!
The high intensity energy of thier performance is infectious to the audience. Every little nuance of thier movements created a wave of ecstacy in the crowd. Screams of joy and approval rained from the ampetheatre down to the group. I felt like a lover entangled in a dance when the ballads poured out. Trampled By Turtles is difficult to describe to those who had never heard of them. I can only say that they are an experience, you must be there to know. Once they have touched your soul, you will forever be changed and will forever be a TBT follower.
What an amazing show. I went with my best friend for her birthday and their family are very close friends of the band and she loves their music. So I got her as close to stage as I could. We were dancing and having a really good time, but we couldn't really see the stage since we're both pretty short. Then after a couple songs they stopped so they could wish my friend a happy birthday!!! She just about died and the people I front of us moved so we could be closer to the stage after wishing her a happy birthday. What an experience.
Trampled by Turtles with Lord Huron. Lord Huron went first and rocked it. A few times they seemed to have a rock n roll vibe that the crowd ate up. We talked to a few people and wondered why Lord Huron was the opening act and not the headliner.
Trampled by Turtles came on, no drums, just stringed instruments... but wow, they rocked it hard. People were dancing and jumping as these guys jammed.
Great show by both bands, both highly recommended. We'll see them next time they come and we'll be sure to bring friends.
Attended this event to see Trampled by Turtles and the Brewfest was an added bonus. The music was delivered clear, amazing in sound quality and anticipated by the audience. Not one soul in the audience claimed to be from that town in Footloose because EVERYONE was dancing and enjoying the phenomenal talent that graced our ears.
That fiddle player? No words. Just...no words. I can't seem to wrap my head around the capacity of talent held in one single human being.
Baltimore Sound Stage was a great place to see a show. The parking allowed us to visit Inner Harbor for a few hours and was so convenient to the Venue. Trampled By Turtles were soooo much fun ! They can really get people rocking! We would definitely go back to BSS for another show and we are already looking to see where we can attend our next TBT show !

Went to Red Rocks primarily to see Lord Huron and the beautiful amphitheater. Had never heard of Trampled by Turtles. They were very entertaining and quite a group of talented musicians. Although that was really not my genre of music I thought they were good and talented with a great sound. Concerts are always more fun when you know the songs. Great evening!
