Perhaps there really is such a thing as getting too much, too soon, too fast, and perhaps it doesn’t necessarily need to involve drug-induced mayhem and breakdowns in order to hold true; back in 2001, within just two years of forming and with most members in their early twenties, Los Angeles rockers The Calling tasted international success with their debut single ‘Wherever You Will Go’, but soon came crashing back to earth when they failed to match the runaway popularity of the song that Billboard’s adult pop charts called the best of the decade. Instead, they ultimately split in 2005 after a disappointing commercial and critical performance from their sophomore album, Two, which they toured heavily across the globe; in fairness, to adoring fans each night, with their fanbase representing a pretty straightforward crossover between screaming teenage girls and more discerning mainstream rock fans. In 2013, the group came back together after a few years of frontman Alex Band playing their songs solo on the road; their plans were initially disrupted by an incident with saw Band brutally mugged in Michigan, but with him making a mercifully quick recovery, expect a third record before too long and, if past form is anything to go by, some extensive touring, too.
