London-based artist and multi-instrumentalist I am Harlequin is known to her mum as Anne Freier. It’s been noted more than once that there’s a touch of Florence Welch in Anne’s voice and indeed in the drama of the songs, which burst with inventive spirit, but of more interest perhaps is the breadth of quality her songs and performances possess; a one-trick pony this girl is not.

Born in East Germany towards the end of the GDR era, Anne enjoyed an early exposure to ballet and opera, only later discovering international rock and pop through illegally-made tape recordings. Anna’s music owes as much to her classical influences as it does to pop heroes such as Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush and Rickie Lee Jones.

Still to release a full album, the likes of 6Music, Radio 2, Radio 4, Q Radio and NME Radio have all been quick to get behind the tracks released so far and greater recognition surely beckons for this talented young lady.

“If she isn’t on Jools Holland within the year we will be calling for an emergency debate in parliament and we will DEMAND answers!” – The VPME

Prior to forming Deafkid, founder members Christopher Lockington and Florian Sauviare collaborated with Ghostpoet on his Mercury Music Prize nominated album "Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam" and formed the live band for the subsequent tours 2009-2012. Having played their last show with Ghostpoet in Berlin earlier this month in order to concentrate solely on Deafkid, there is much anticipation around the handful of live dates planned for October.
