American punk rock band Sugarcult have, in my humble opinion, never achieved the kind of recognition and success they deserved, especially considering the wave of mediocre pop punk bands that hit the mainstream in the noughties. Frontman/guitarist Tim Pagnotta’s vocals are brilliant and distinctive, unlike most punk bands from this era who tried to mimic one or both of the blink-182 singers. When I first saw them live, supporting Brand New at one of their first headline shows in London, at the sorely missed Astoria, they really made a lasting impression on me. Although they were pop punk, they incorporated more alt-rock elements, especially on the impassioned tracks like ‘Stuck in America’ and screamy ballad ‘Pretty Girl (The Way)’, form their breakthrough album Start Static. ‘Bouncing Off The Walls Again’, also from Start Static, is one of the catchiest pop punk songs of all time, and when they played it the whole venue was bounding around joyously. Their follow-up album, Palm Trees and Power Lines, also featured super-catchy gems like ‘She’s The Blade’ and ‘Memory’. The band have been pretty quiet as of late, except a handful of well-received shows in 2011 celebrating the ten year anniversary of Start Static, but hopefully they will be back on the touring circuit in no time. Success is long overdue.
