Everybody Got Soul!! If you don't know Uncle Lucius then you don't know that line from their song of the same name. It goes a long way toward describing the live experience you'll get when you go see my favorite "Uncle".
I first saw these guys at Harvest Fest in Ozark, AR last year and I had no intention of watching their entire set. In fact, I really knew nothing about them when they took to the "Mother's Brewing Company Stage", but something about their look drew my interest before they even played a note. That stage reminded me of an old barn wood porch and these were the guys that I wanted to hang out with and listen to jam on that porch. A barefooted Kevin Galloway, stepped to the mic and started belting mesmerizing vocals that seemed to be delivered straight from somewhere deep inside his soul. John Grossman soon began to pound the keyboard with enough flair to delight any Bruce Lee fan and each and every one of these 5 guys began to captivate me. The lyrics to these songs I had never heard were making me think and I realized that these guys had a lot going for them. I was hooked and the other act I was planning to leave and go see would have to wait! After that experience, I watched for them to come to KC and jumped at the chance to see them again and they didn't disappoint!
So here's the truth. I like to listen to these guy's recorded stuff, but they are the kind of band that you have got to see live! They really crank it up and feed off each other. They can really jamb and make a song last for what seems like a head spinning eternity where you want to explode in applause 20 times as you think they can't push it any further and yet they do.
Describing their style seems like a tall order as they have a lot of different elements and genres infused into their music, but Southern Rock is a good start and the element that comes through for me is that Soul influence. That brings me back to my original thought about Uncle Lucius. They sing "Everybody Got Soul". They believe it! They seem genuine. They are speaking to and for the Everyman! Let me tell you. Not many have Got more Soul than the boys of Uncle Lucius! I hope they come back soon and I hope you get out and see them in your town.
