The great American Post-Hardcore boom of the early 2000’s has already been responsible for a many a great band but what hasn’t been quite as focused on is what it could evolve into. It may still be modern Emo rock’s closest cousin but many bands that have been shoved under the “post-hardcore” umbrella could fit much better under the name art-rock. Take O’Brother here, they are hot on the heels of the likes of Brand New, La Dispute, Manchester Orchestra and the dearly departed Thrice to be the next to grow out of the term “post-hardcore” and start making music that is textured, deep, multi-layered and demands the listeners full attention. Of course, wrapping all that up with a deliciously kick-ass guitar riff is the ideal, especially where O’Brother is concerned, and that comes across amazingly well in their live show. It’s all balance with them, which means their show is equal parts bearing witness to a performance of great complexity and artistic depth and howling along to your favourite chorus’ and moshing your little heart out. O’Brother could be a truly inspirational band with that in mind; true art is the combination of “high culture” and “low culture” after all and with a live show as explosive, meaningful and all around fun as this one, it’s only a matter of time before others take after them. One to see as soon as possible.
