Biography
Originally formed by Cleveland-native Michael LoPresti in 2008, The Lighthouse and The Whaler moniker draws its inspiration from Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick”. The band’s debut song, “The Field Song”, arrived the same year and was the result of members’ first collaboration in a farmer's field near where they lived. The song was later featured as a sampler by Paste Magazine, which represented the bands’ first notable breakthrough. Ahead of a debut album, LoPresti, alongside members Mathew LoPresti, Mark Porostosky, and Ryan Walker, issued the EP “A Whisper, a Clamour”.
In November 2009 the band released their self-titled, debut album. Showcasing strained, heartfelt lyrics, undeniably indie-rock lead guitar, and refined accompaniment, the record did wonders for the group’s reputation and led to a series of high profile performances. Following a show at SXSW 2010 and at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, The Lighthouse and The Whaler opened for The Temper Trap, GIVERS, and Motion City Soundtrack.
Sequestering themselves away at Bear Creek Studios in Washington, former sojourn to the likes of The Lumineers, The Walkmen, and Ra Ra Riot, the band began work on their sophomore album. To bridge the gap before the full-length release, The Lighthouse and The Whaler released the three-track EP “Pioneers”, which was well-received. In September 2012 the band released their second studio album “This is an Adventure” to positive reviews from critics and fans alike. The group supported the release with tours in support of Jukebox the Ghost, Ra Ra Riot, and Ewert and the Two Dragons, before playing shows at CMJ, Pop! Montreal, and SXSW.
Live reviews
An amazing show! Their new songs were so good and they were wonderful performers. I'd also like to mention that Matt is very kind because when we tried to take a picture my phone wasn't cooperating so he took it and posted it on twitter for me. Overall, such an awesome time (:
