Fifteen studio albums and thirty-eight singles is quite a large statistic isn’t it. This depicts the fruitful career seen by soul and R&B outfit, The Gap Band. They rose to fame in 1977 with their self-titled third studio album. This is the band that is responsible for songs such as “Oops Upside Your Head”, “You Dropped a Bomb on Me”, “Outstanding”, “Party Train” and many more.
The lights are down, with strobe lights sporadically flicking on during a black out. They illuminate the stage just enough to figure out what exactly is going on. Accompanying this episode is a chorus of screams, surpassing what feels like the decibels of a Boeing about to take flight.
They walk onstage to the applause of adoring fans, ready to jump however high front man, Charlie Wilson asks them to jump. The lights are turned up bright as he walks on stage. His showmanship is second to none as he manages to get every single person in the building dancing and singing along at the same time. Of course one of the biggest highlights of this set is when they quietly break down the jam to a quiet section and start “Oops Upside Your Head”. The incredible thing is that the audience starts singing this song entirely on their own accord. The band start playing the song, and Wilson, just gives the actions to get them singing the song, of course the audience reply with this very song. There are so many call and response moments between Wilson and the audience each one better than the last.
