Sleepy Party People is an avant garde act with a melancholy sound and a unique, somber stage presence. Their electronic sound is slow to build, and the vocalist uses subdued attitudes to avoid taking a fronting presence in the music. When the full band's instruments come in to play, each member of the band seems to sort of come alive with the beat of their instrument, the drummer bouncing in his seat with the beat, the keyboard player swinging his head to his slow synth tune. The stage is set up sparsely, and the limited and erratic decorations lend to the mysterious atmosphere of the performance. The harsh and jagged lights create deep shadows on the back wall, which would seem out of place except matched by the all black costumes of the band. As the breakdown comes, the musicians again slow, but continue to interract with each other in a show that is at once musical performance, interpretive dance, and modern performance art. The audience doesn't move, or react, simply watching and taking in all of the ambience and the subtled, varied aspects of the performance. The face masks worn by the band help keep an air of separation between the artists and the audience, which adds a layer of separation to an otherwise intimate performance in a small venue.
Seeing Sleep Party People live brings a combination of pop hits in a alter ego dimension with piano lullabies, and a fairytale of instrumental tunes. Seeing them live is the only way to experience the truly unique presence the bunny masked band produce.
The style if eerie and original, leaving a haunted feeling in your body as you dance slowly away to the musical delights cleverly produced by Sleep Party People. Contrary to the name, they won’t send you to sleep, but, send your mind, body and soul into an aura of delusional dreamy state.
Left masked, Sleep Party People leave a sense of mystery, with each song being unique and different from the next. “I’m not Human at all” and “Notes to you” will please your ears and leave in a state of content, being in your ears for weeks to come. Light beats, heavy synths and cleverly put together melodies will send you into a trance.
If hopping to Denmark to see a live act is next on your bucket list then let Sleep Party People be the ones to tick it off.
