Biography
Comprised of vocalist/guitarist David Larson, guitarist Filip Bekic, bassist Magnus Robert, and drummer Frans Povel, The Royal Concept, initially dubbed The Concept, was formed in 2010. The same year the band rose to recognition with the release of their debut single “Damn”, followed a year later with “D-D-Dance” and “Gimme Twice”. The records, aided by their summer-inspiring vibe, caught the attention of national radio station P3, exposing the band to a national audience. The Concept continued to generated buzz for themselves by playing the 2011 Peace & Love arts festival, after which the band changed their name to The Royal Concept.
In early 2012 the band signed with Lava Records, subsequently releasing their self-titled debut EP. The June release of “The Royal Concept” spawned the singles “World on Fire” and “Naked and Dumb”, which highlight the band’s wide influences including Phoenix, Kim Wilde and Japanese pop. The record was supported by a North American tour opening for the Wombats and Wolf Gang, after which the four-piece returned to the studio to develop their debut full-length.
In mid-2013 The Royal Concept released the single “On Our Way” ahead of their Swedish-released studio album “Goldrushed”, issued in September. To promote the album, the band embarked on a U.S. tour in support of American Authors and Misterwives, on top of crafting the Spotify single “27 Forever”. The Royal Concept subsequently covered Linnea Hendrickson’s “Cecilia” and Robert Palmer’s “Simply Irresistible” for E!’s Live From the Red Carpet, before touring in support of Switchfoot. In May 2014 the band released “Goldrushed” in Japan, after which the single “On Our Way” featured on the EA Sports video game “FIFA 14”.
Live reviews
The Royal Concept: an outrageously catchy and fun-loving blend of indie-rock and pop. There is something incredibly fun and easy about these guys that is often woefully lacking in other alternative rock/pop bands. Perhaps best described as the love-child of bands such as American Authors and The Naked and Famous, TRC is one of the freshest and most relevant bands today. Having seen them on stage at a festival, I can easily say that it was the perfect setting for their summer friendly tunes, allowing optimum dance-whilst-waving-arms-wildly space. Brilliant musicians with awesome stage presence, it is not hard to see how these guys managed to progress from relative national success in Sweden to almost overnight success on an international level. Opening with hits ‘Gimme Twice’ and ‘D-D-Dance’ produced uproar from the crowd and ending with latest hit ‘On Our Way’ was a move of pure genius. The resulting frenzy from the hysterical teens and students was film-worthy and will be, in place of a video camera, forever recorded in my memory. Made up of vocalist/guitarist David Larson, guitarist Filip Bekic, bassist Magnus Robert, and drummer Frans Povel, I can honestly say that these guys are destined for big things. A definite must see.
There is some really great rock music coming out of Scandinavia currently and riding this wave is Swedish four piece The Royal Concept. They first came to fans and critics attention in 2012 with a solid, catchy eponymous EP and since then things have really taken off for the group. The fact they record in English means they have an international appeal so have therefore performed across Europe with numerous stop offs in the UK at prolific festivals including Reading & Leeds.
The British audiences are receptive to the Swedish musicians as their music is undeniably catchy and it is all created between the four musicians to a really high standard when you consider the group only came together in 2010. They also have a great natural manner when interacting with the crowd especially when you remember that English is not their first language. A sharp, succinct set concluding with 'Shut The World' is a little taste as to what The Royal Concept can do and leaves the crowd hungry for more.
