Usually when I see DJs perform, it’s a kind of background music in a club or similar venue, but when I saw Benny Page’s live set, it was in a huge music venue, and I really think it made all the difference. Rather than listening to the music as background tracks, I was totally invested in what Page was playing, and the skill that’s required for the mixing that he was doing right in front of us was crazy. There was a go pro camera positioned to the side of the desk, and the video of him working the decks was projected behind him which was awesome. You never imagine how complicated it can be to produce the kind of drum and bass that Page does but watching him flick between so many tracks, employ samples, and use electronic instruments was amazing.
He played a really great selection of tracks, from original songs, to some remixes and a couple of covers. He opened the set with his track Turn The Lights Down, and with his microphone, shouted out to everyone in the crowd to dance along, which I think most of us were already doing! The show was almost 2 hours long, and he maintained incredible energy throughout the show from start to finish, and didn’t even stop for a break during the set. In some of his tracks that use samples, he was holding his microphone out to he audience, telling us to join in singing, and it was awesome to feel so involved in a live show.
