Australian Producer/DJ Ta-ku has certainly built up a reputation as an industrious member of the electronic music scene over the last three years. Progressing from bedroom producer to collaborator with the likes Chet Faker and CyHi The Prince is no easy feat, but his quick success proves that hard work really does pay off. In 2013 he released an incredible six albums and EP’s, including his two part LP 50 Days for Dilla, where he produced, you guessed it, 50 J Dilla sampling tracks, to pay homage to the legendary hip-hop producer and his hugely popular “Songs to Break Up To” which featured the Willow Smith sampling single “I Miss You.” Oh, and he opened up a barbershop in his hometown of Perth. If that wasn’t enough, it was impossible to visit music blogs without seeing his name pop up as he regularly remixed the likes of Banks and Aluna George, flipping their tracks to fit his chilled out, evening stroll on the beach vibe.
While I’ve not seen him perform live in the UK, I was incredibly lucky to catch him play at his Boiler Room set in Australia in his hometown of Perth and it was definitely an experience, mixing his trademark slowed down beats with Dubstep anthems, Ta-ku kept the crowd bouncing well into the early hours.
There really was no better venue than Moma PS1 for Ta-ku's live set because it really amplified the music but also worked really well with the beautiful visuals for his set. Ta-ku has a beautiful voice and creates great music, and he's a really outgoing and genuine artist. Loved that Wafia was featured throughout his set and their cover of American Girl was amazing. Also to top this show, the TBA artist was Flume and he killed it, especially with a Notorious B.I.G. mix. Probably one of the best shows I've ever been to.
