Biography
Born Nicholas Williams, the most that Trinidad James can remember about his early life is that he spent his early life all over the place. His family moved from his native Trinidad to Canada, then Florida, then New York before finally settling down in Atlanta, Georgia. Apart from that, nada. A head injury he sustained at the age of seven is why his early years are lost to the mists of time but at the very least we can be thankful it didn’t affect his motor skills. Since after he started rapping in 2011, James has become one of the most exciting rappers of his generation, and that’s not just us talking as well. All you need to do is take one look at the list of artists he’s collaborated with. James is a man in demand, indeed.
One of the first full tracks that James made a demo for was his future debut single “All Gold Everything”. It was released in October 2012 on his debut mixtapes “Don’t Be S.A.F.E”, and clearly he struck on something sensational with that track as it was what netted him a two million dollar record deal with Def Jam Records in December 2012. The record went on to peak in the top forty of the Billboard Hot 100, sell over half a million copies, and be remixed by no lesser names than 2 Chainz, T.I and Young Jeezy. It was the song that made his career and though he was dropped from Def Jam in 2014, it’s still one more hit than most are ever going to get.
January 2015 saw the release of two E.P’s, “The Wake Up E.P” and the “No-One Is Safe” E.P, and after some troubled times, Trinidad James seems to be realizing the potential he started off his career with. For that, he comes highly recommended.
Live reviews
Over the last 24 months, watching Trinidad James emerge into the rap scene has been something great to witness. In fact, I can’t believe that I has only been 2 years that I’ve been following him for. I’ve loved his style of hip hop rap from the word go, and to see him in concert just confirmed for me simply how talented James is. I first heard his music when he released All Gold Everything, and then subsequently began listening to his mix tape Don’t Be S.A.F.E. I was fortunate enough to see James whilst he was still signed to his record label, so the tour had sufficient financial backing, He played as support to another artist, so the majority of the crowd weren’t there to see James himself, but as soon as he started playing, everyone seemed to be loving it. He had people singing along to songs that they hadn’t even known before they walked in the door which was awesome.
He was vocally on top form, and powered his way through big tracks such as All Gold Everything, and Females Welcomed. During the songs, as well as giving a great vocal performance, he was dancing around stage with such high energy, I was amazed he was still able to sing! It’s a shame that he’s no longer signed, but hopefully someone will pick him up soon, because he’s a great artist.
