THE FIRST VIRTUAL POP OPERA ABOUT THE LONGING DEATH OF A DIGITAL SUPERSTAR.
More than 100,000 songs, over 170,000 youtube videos, a big US concert tour and a worldwide fan base: The blue-haired girl Hatsune Miku from Japan is one of the biggest international pop stars. She only differs from Madonna and the likes in the way that Hatsune Miku is an animated 3D character whose songs are composed by her fans themselves. In 2007 she was released online to publicize a new software for synthetic vocals. Provided with a free license, users since then have further animated her digital body and have written songs for her character.
One of her fans is Keichiiro Shibuya, one of Japan's best known young composers, DJs and pianists. Based on a text by the Japanese theater innovator Toshiki Okada he has composed an opera for Hatsune Miku, that puts this genre into the present with synthetic music and cutting-edge animation technology. On a stage made of several screens, Hatsune Miku – in costumes by Louis Vuitton - is projected larger than life, while Shibuya accompanies her live on stage. THE END is spectacular, synaesthetic overwhelming, and a touching examination with the longing for death of an eternal 16-year-old virtual character.
