Marmoucha Orchestra presents Wahj, a new live performance based on the album of the same name by Toni Geitani. For this production, Geitani and fellow members of the orchestra have developed new arrangements that reimagine the album for an ensemble of six musicians.
Sung in classical Arabic (fuṣḥā) and rooted in maqām traditions, Wahj moves fluidly between experimental Arabic music, electronics, avant-pop, dark ambient, and industrial sound worlds. The live performance interweaves sound and light, featuring a light installation by lighting designer Luuk van der Heijden. Instrumentation and electronics shape the musical landscape, while audio-reactive lighting responds in real time, creating a dynamic and immersive environment.
Wahj (Arabic for “radiance”) explores the idea of “collapse” as a landscape from which resistance, hope, and new possibilities inevitably emerge. The performance constructs an Arab-futurist space that is both intimate and immersive, resonating with audiences across contemporary music, ambient electronics, the Arab and SWANA diaspora, and the international arts and festival scene.
