Electric Guest hail from sunny Los Angeles and consists of Asa Taccone, Matthew Compton and brothers Todd and Tory Dahlhoff. Making delicious indie dream pop sounds since 2011, they released their debut 'Mondo' in 2012 with the help of super-hip producer Danger Mouse (Brian Burton). Danger Mouse took the band under his wing after a friend asked for his honest opinion on his little brother's music – his friend's little brother turning out to be Electric Guests' Asa. Danger Mouse loved it and the rest is history. His presence can certainly be felt throughout the record in from of various funky electro beats. I had seen Electric Guest before at the brilliant Sasquatch festival at the Gorge Amphitheatre, Washington. Here in the UK they have quite a following. I caught them at Live at Leeds Festival in 2013 at Leeds Metropolitan University. In the dark and dingy room, Electric Guest walked out on stage with frontman Asa - always engaging and chatty - greeting the crowd and thanking us for coming to watch them. Highlights of their set included the rather cool beat on 'Holes' that had all the band members bopping along which simultaneous had the crowd doing the same thing. 'This Head I Hold' proves that this band can also nail a perfectly catchy pop song (the song was used in multiple adverts). My personal favourite, 'Troubleman' is textured and soothing and enabled you to drift off to a far away place...it is over eight minutes long after all. With only one album out, this band are still in the early days of their career, but they're off to a good start.
Fun fact about lead singer Asa Taccone – he has a 'Creative Arts Emmy for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics' for his part in helping to write American comedy troupe, The Lonely Island's song 'Dick In A Box'. Surely if you were going to win an Emmy, you'd want it to be for something as ridiculous as that.
