Tuesday 30th May. The Moth Club, London. Cale Tyson. A new venue for me tonight in the hipster part of town that’s Hackney. It’s all skinny jeans, plaid shirts and beards and that’s just the women (Ed’s note. thanks to J Berry for that quip). The venue itself is a working man’s club on acid with a gold sparkling ceiling that’s quite trippy when the light catches it.
Opening proceedings tonight are the five piece American/Oxford based The Loud Mountains. A nice set from a talented group with a touch of the Jayhawks about them.
Cale Tyson is a young country singer songwriter from Nashville and he’s here tonight with full band promoting his recent album, the excellent Careless Soul. It’s a beautiful country soul album with shades of Chuck Prophet and our very own Rockingbirds.
Coming off the back of seeing Andrew Combs and Brent Cobb over the past two weeks, Tyson completes a fantastic trilogy of great young singer songwriters to grace London recently.
His set is full of pathos and his self-deprecating banter belittles his immense talent. The band are understated but provide the perfect backing with special props to the keyboard player with the ‘best haircut in the band’ according to Tyson along with a great voice in his own right.
The set is a nice blend from his two albums mixing the former’s honky tonk style along with the accomplished soul style of the second. There’s time for his only love song where he encouraged the audience to dance but only if they are good. Four people took the challenge and held their own.
In a night of highlights the title track ‘Careless Soul’ and ‘Travelling Man’ stand out for me. If there’s any justice his stock should be a lot higher over here especially as there’s has been a resurgence of audiences for a lot of country acts I have seen in the past couple of years.
