As one of Frances most renowned and influential hip hop artists, 45 year old Claude M'Barali, aka. MC Solaar, was a artist who I had been desperate to experience live since I first heard his music, back in the late 90s. The thing that appeals to me about Solaar and makes his music as unique as it is, are his poetic lyrics, and powerful messages that he conveys through his songs. This aspect of the music is something that I’ve always picked up on, but when he came to perform live, I was blown away on a whole new level. Hearing those lyrics sung in Solaar’s powerful voice made it seem very personal, and drew me into him as an artist and an individual as isn’t possible on the recordings.
The audience were on their feet, singing and dancing around from start to finish. As well as great lyrics, his choruses are fantastic. He Also gets the audience riled up and involved with his performance, jumping up and down, joining in with the choruses with the catchy hooks, and shouting out requests. It was great when he’d shout ‘come on now’ and get everyone jumping around or singing. He’s a genuinely great guy, who wants his fans to have a great time at his shows, which is such an important characteristic of a performer.
