I find multi-instrumentalists fascinating, and after listening to Dosh’s recordings for many years, I was incredibly excited to hear him perform live. As his work is performed solo, I was intrigued to see how he created all of the sounds in a live setting, as he had guitar, drums, electronic samples, and many other elements playing at the same time. When we arrived at the venue, the stage was already set up, and there was an upright piano, a drum kit, a synth, and several electronic mixers and samplers, I couldn’t wait to see how he was going to make this work with several instruments and just one of him!
Dosh walked out on stage to a huge cheer from the crowd, and sat down behind the piano and launched into a track that I hadn’t hard before. Just as I was coming to the conclusion that he would just be playing one instrument at a time and swapping between them, he stomped on a loop pedal under the piano that repeated the hook he’d been playing, and jumped over to the drums. As the set built and built he was adding more layers and distorting tracks on his mixing desk, constantly dropping out certain loops and building out others. The show was absolutely incredible, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more talented musician perform live.
