Chainsaw Fugue

Right next to the CSX Trainyard.

If you’ve lived in Cincinnati long enough, you probably recognize the ambient, ghostly squeal that resonates high into the hills of Northside, Spring Grove Village, Clifton, into the West End and downtown. This “flange squeal” is the result of a train’s flange interacting with a rail curve or switch. For many, this sound has become a grounding essence of Cincinnati, a siren call that stirs the world beyond our city’s hills and valleys.

I (Nina) am excited to announce a project I have been orchestrating with my friend Cathy Wagner called “Flange Squeal.” Flange Squeal invites some of our city’s great musicians, sound artists and poets to perform work that highlights and interacts with the ambient auditory experience of the train yard located behind 2701 Spring Grove Ave.
