With his mother encouraging his pursuit of musical ambitions, Giveon went on at age 18 to attend a music education program at the Grammy Museum.
During Gideon’s music education, he discovered a deep connection to the sounds of Frank Sinatra and came into the full power of his resonant voice. In addition to finding inspiration from crooner Sinatra, Giveon draws much of his musical influence from the American jazz of the 1960s and 1970s.
In 2018, Giveon entered the music scene with two self-released singles, “Garden Kisses” and “Fields.” These ballads showcased his incredible talent as both a singer and a songwriter. Soon after, he was discovered by Canadian record producer Sevn Thomas and landed a deal with Epic Records. With the help of a production team, Giveon dropped his next single “Like I Want You.”
After his first studio debut, Giveon went on tour with Snoh Aalegra as an opening act in 2019. With only a few singles released, much of Giveon’s performance was a showcase of his freestyle rap capabilities. During a performance in Chicago, Giveon’s manager recorded his freestyle performance and shared it with legendary rapper Drake. Drake was so impressed by Giveon’s talent that he featured Giveon on the single “Chicago Freestyle,” which dropped in 2020.
With a growing fan base and exposure to other talented musicians, Giveon released his debut EP, Take Time, in 2020. At the same time, his previous single, “Like I Want You,” was growing in popularity, reaching the top 20 on the US Billboard R&B Songs charts. Later in the year, “Chicago Freestyle” was released for streaming alongside a mixtape by Drake. The song quickly became a chart-topper, earning Giveon his first place on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
In the fall of 2020, Giveon released his second EP When It's All Said and Done, which debuted at number 93 on the US Billboard 200 chart and quickly climbed the charts. Wrapping up an incredibly successful year, Take Time earned a nomination for Best R&B Album at the Grammy Awards.
In the spring of 2021, Giveon released a compilation album of his two previous EPs titled When It's All Said and Done... Take Time, along with a new song “All to Me.” Adding to the young artist's exposure, he was featured on Justin Bieber’s Grammy-nominated single "Peaches.” Soon after appearing on Bieber’s album, Giveon was featured on Drake’s album Certified Lover Boy as a co-writer of “In the Bible.”
Giveon released his first-ever full studio album, Give or Take, in 2022. This album features stunning vocals and heavy lyrics that demonstrate the vulnerability that the artist brings to his music. With his graceful and soulful voice, Giveon used his latest album to discuss everything from insecurity to loneliness to forgiveness.
