UNI and The Urchins

Whatever you do, do not miss this band if they're playing near (or not so near) you. Knowing nothing of them aside from a ecstatic urging by a friend who'd seen them the day before in Seattle, I saw them open for Starcrawler at Portland's sandwich shop-cum-rock venue Bunk Bar. Despite the tiny venue with less than 100 people in attendance, the aesthetic, attitude, and performance of the band left me feeling like I was watching seasoned rock gods playing to a sold out arena. Nico has undeniable charisma as he sings and I found myself reminded of Marc Bolan of T Rex. David Strange was decked out in true glam rock style as he worked his magic on the guitar, but it was Charlotte and her glitter covered bass that stole the show for me. Decked out in a full 60's mod outfit with the look to match, I'd never seen someone so interesting looking and her complex bass lines really had me moving. They only have a few singles out so far, but given the material they played at the show I'm guessing an album will soon be forthcoming and I can't wait to see them again for a full headlining set.
