DJ ZInc has been at the heart of the jungle and drum & bass movement for over two decades now. Together with DJ Hype as part of the Ganja Kru, they created some of the biggest drum & bass tracks of the 90s. Real name Benjamin Pettit, his 1995 hit ‘Super sharp Shooter’ was undoubtedly a huge anthem, still heralded as a D &B classic to this day. Zinc has even achieved chart success with the D&B/2-step crossover ‘138 Trek,’ reaching #27 in the UK charts. He continues to be prolific with his output to this day, incorporating many different genres and styles into his productions, creating a smorgasbord of the past twenty years of bass music.
His set at Brighton’s Shakedown festival this year was akin to a rhino charging into your living room, skanking wildly upon entrance. A mixture of classic jungle and breaks alongside his more recent, uniquely Zinc, ‘crack house’ style, it was an absolute tour de force of bass. Electronic music has exploded in recent years, gaining huge popularity. With the accessibility of the internet and the digital age, there are thousands who, armed with a Mac and Fruit Loops, consider themselves to be a DJ. Yet it takes artists like DJ Zinc to remind us of what it really takes to be a top quality producer. He has been in the game for two decades, but continues to challenge the next generation and be at the centre of the drum & bass world.
