Towards the tail end of the 2000s Hernández met producer Brian Hunt and before long the two began collaborating together. Hunt assisted in the singer’s recording of a demo, which featured the still unpublished tracks “Reason”, “The Night of the Paper” and “Sadie”. Hernández uploaded the tracks to her MySpace and found herself with over 70,000 visits to her page by 2008. The singer started making inroads into the Spanish indie scene which an extensive list of performances in 2007 including the Primavera Sound festival among others.
The name Russian Red is derived from the colour lipstick the singer usually wears, and from previously being in a band that was without a name and developing an obsession with finding the perfect moniker.
In 2008 Hernández was asked by Spanish music producer Fernando Vacas to record an album to be issued by his label Eureka. Russian Red’s debut album “I Love Your Glasses” was what resulted, and quickly became popular within indie circles and some mainstream circles. After the release Hernández signed with Octubre of Sony Music Spain in 2010 through which she issued her sophomore album “Fuertoventura” in May, 2011. The album was recorded in Glasgow, Scotland with producer Tony Doogan, known for his work with alternative artists Belle & Sebastian, Dave Byrne and Mogwai. Following the successful release Hernández embarked on a tour of Asia includeng China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
Hernández has subsequently released the 2014 album “Agent Cooper” accompanied by the singles “Casper”, “John Michael” and “Michael P”.

How do you choose between an awesome stage name and your awesome real name? On one hand, Russian Red sounds super cool and comes from the colour of a lipstick that Hernandez usually endorses, but with a name like Lourdes Hernandez, how do you choose?!
With that little thought in writing lets talk about Russian Red, a Spanish indie folk singer-songwriter, who sings in English simply because she has always listened to music in English. Russian Red is one of those artists that it’s fun to find the Easter eggs of songs online, and better yet, it is fun to experience what she does live. Tonight is a perfect blend of material taken from her three albums, “I Love You Glasses”, “Fuerteventura” and “Agent Cooper” Opening with the song “The Sun, the Trees”, this songstress has a smooth sultry tone about her voice that could even be described as quirky, “My Love is Gone” is the stripped back moment where you could hear a pin drop in this room. “Casper” is the most recent song that she performs tonight, drawing the audience into the world that is Russian Red, and my, is it a pretty one.
Love Russian Red, but please note that this "concert" was just two songs long. The evening was actually devoted to a comedy troupe who had her play at the very end of the evening. A great disappointment to me since I had to sit through three hours of mediocre to awful stand up (with one good act in there.. a surprise appearance by Hannibal Buress).
Bottom line - read the fine print before purchasing tickets.
