Where legendary punk movements are concerned, they don’t come too much bigger than the CBGBs scene in New York in the seventies. One of the iconic bands of that particular era were The Cramps, who kicked off the garage punk movement in their own right and later went on to pioneer the psychobilly sound, too. Comprised of singer Lux Interior, his wife, guitarist Poison Ivy, and a slew of touring musicians over the years, the band continued to write and record throughout the eighties and nineties, with their final album, the brilliantly-titled Fiends of Dope Island, dropping in 2003; ‘Elvis Fucking Christ!’, ‘Dr. Fucker M.D.’ and ‘Papa Satan Sang Louie’ from that album proved that their penchant for a daft title went beyond the album names, and that record genuinely stands up to their older material, too, proving that their sound hadn’t dated. They continued to tour, too, with Interior a compelling frontman; his signature stage move was to ‘swallow’ the mic as he screamed into it. He’d usually sweat profusely, too, on account of his furious dancing; his onstage behaviour made him one of the era’s most exciting performers. His passing in 2009 led to the dissolution of the band, but their influence remains steadfast; Yeah Yeah Yeahs, for instance, continue to cover ‘Human Fly’ at their live shows, and Karen O clearly takes more than a few cues from Interior in terms of her own performances, too - there’s no question that their iconic status within punk is guaranteed.
