The band is built around the personal and professional relationship between trumpet player Alex Toth and saxophonist and singer Kalmia Traver. The duo met while studying at the University of Vermont, they were both music major while they were there, and after they left they both found a job performing in the reggae band John Brown’s Body. However, Toth was preparing to form a band of his own the whole time, one that combined psychedelic indie rock, with dance rhythms and experimental tendencies. Traver was on board but the duo needed a third member for the band to truly click, and in June 2007 they found the missing piece in the form of percussionist Craig Myers.
For the rest of the year, the nascent band jammed, wrote and recorded together, putting together the songs that would make up their debut album “Rose’s Dream”. By March 2008 they’d finished the album, self-released it, and put together a live band under the name Rubblebucket Orchestra to head out on tour full-time. Right off the bat they were hugely acclaimed both for their live shows and for their debut album, and remained so for their subsequent albums, E.Ps and tours, but it wasn’t until 2011 that they signed a distribution deal with MRI for the release of their third album “Omega La La”. Ever since then, they’ve signed a proper record deal with Communion Records and remained a truly unmissable live act. They have the indie rock world at their feet, and the brightest of futures ahead of them, and for that, they come highly recommended.

Rubblebucket is a must see, their new album is solid from beginning to end. The live atmosphere is like nothing I've seen in a long time and great for people that want to have a good time and dance or just listen to some amazing musicians.
This is a very talented band and it can be seen throughout the new album from the diversity of instruments used to the guitar solos and amazing bass riffs. Their live performance from a sound perspective is on point compared to the album but with more feeling and really allows you to feel what they are trying to project through their music.
From a performance perspective they definitely put on a show and are basically another extension of their unique sound, going from a soft melody to bass pumping headbanging/jumping that just takes over your body.
If you have the chance to see them live, I would highly recommend it and that even goes for those of you who might not initially think that their sound is something you'd like. Until you hear and see them live you really can't understand the amazing music and atmosphere that they project.
Case in point was when I brought a friend along who doesn't follow music like most who are familiar with bands like Rubblebucket and walked away saying that was one of the best concerts he'd ever been too. This was after I had played some of their music to get him more acquainted with the band and it really didn't grab his attention. But when they came out and started playing he couldn't help but dance and enjoy their music.
The only thing, I think that is holding them back from being more well known, is the fact that their sound is so unique, especially in today's current music scene. But to me that just makes it that much sweeter!
Make sure you catch them at a smaller venue while you still can! B/c the overall vibe just won't be the same, since these are musicians that really love what they do and reciprocate that to their fans through their interactions.
My wife and I went to see this show as a 25th anniversary wedding present for ourselves. We've loved Rubblebucket's music since we discovered them several years ago. This show at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor was our first opportunity to see them and it was beautiful. The band seemed genuinely grateful for the audience, with smiles and multiple thank you's from Kalmia. They engaged the audience to sing with them and immersed themselves in the audience by playing in a marching line from the stage to the bar, right through the crowd! I can sum up the experience as saying it was an optimistic and joyful moment at a time when politics and climate change are making the mood dark. Rubblebucket brings a unique flavor of happy artistry that must be seen and experienced. This was a great moment of happiness that we will always remember as the highlight of our 25th anniversary.
As a side note, during the show there were a few technical glitches. I was impressed how Kalmia and the crew powered through them by remaining calm and getting it fixed without appearing to be frustrated or spoiled. Not only is the music great, but their attitude is equally down to earth.
I saw Rubblebucket live in an indie bar in Brooklyn a few years ago. The atmosphere was thick with smoke and alcohol, reminiscent of those you would see the Beatles in, in their early years. I can't remember how long the set was, because by the time we got to the end I was black out drunk, but boy was that music good to listen to that night, it felt like a different experience from hearing them even with my most expensive pair of headphones.
A few of the crowd members were nice enough to keep me on my feet and have an altogether good time, I even got to go up to the front of the crowd and reach out and touch them, which doesn't seem like a huge deal now but drunk me was all over that, figuring it was the greatest thing in the world.
It's a show that I will neither forget or ever remember, and I think those are the best kind of memories. If it wasn't for seeing them, I don't think that I would go to as many shows as I still do.
What a phenomenal show! The crowd was really into it last night a Doug Fir, and for good reason. They put on one of the most energetic and entertaining shows I've ever seen. Most everyone danced the throughout the set and Rubblebucket seemed to get better with each song feeding off the enthusiastic fans cheers. And of course they finish the show with a crowd surf and their ceremonial horn and drum train playing acapella as they weave through the crowd. If you have a chance, don't miss these guys. You will leave with a full heart and a buzzing soul.
Couldn't go because the venue (Anthology) kept moving the set-times back due to non-existent weather . . . Couldn't get a refund on my $27 ticket because the online seller (Ticketfly) doesn't offer refunds ever . . . Obviously not faulting Rubblebucket or Songkick at this time, but doesn't make me wanna try to go thru you, or go see them again anytime soon. Just sayin'.
Every time I see Rubblebucket, they do something on stage I've never seen anyone do before. This is a band that clearly puts their heart and soul into every element of their show and it makes them one of the best live bands I've ever seen. They put on a truly special show that should never be missed.
Rubblebucket are a amazing songwriters and great performers. Their energy is ecstatic and infectious. The show is full of super fun surprises for the crowd. Went home happy, sweaty and covered in confetti.
tl;dr: SEE RUBBLEBUCKET. NEVER DON'T SEE RUBBLEBUCKET.
Like always, they were GREAT! They shared their love for their music, their love of performing & their love for the crowd with us. Electrifying!
This is my 3rd time seeing them, and I'll surely go see them again!
Great Show!!! I brought some friends that didn't know Rubblebucket and they loved it. The performance is amazing and there is so much energy. Music was awesome!!! I'm so glad to be able to see Rubblebucket Live!!!
One of the best shows I’ve been to! They were such great performers, and their energy was amazing. They really interacted with the crowd - it was like a big party! Can’t wait to see them again.
