Submotion Orchestra are one of the most musically diverse bands I have ever come across. A melting pot of dub, soul, jazz, electronica, amongst others. Their first two albums "Finest Hour" and "Fragments" are both beautifully crafted masterpieces. If someone asked you to compare them to another band, there really is no comparision out there. Ruby Wood's hauntingly silky smooth vocals perfectly compliment the rich blend of keys and synthesisers, drums and percussion, brass instruments bathed in rich, warm bass. From lush instrumental and synthesised soundscapes with laid back rhythms, to energetic toe-tapping beats, trumpet solos to basslines that get your head nodding... Submotion Orchestra does it all, and to the highest calibre. Their latest album "Alium" is a continuation of this high standard of output. Expect to see the same level of attention to detail in their shows. Deep guttural bass-soaked musical richness. Given the fact that every song was followed by rapturous applause from the audience, it's hard not to be able to appreciate just how good SO are. They perform a modest set, and the way they behave on stage almost undersells them. There is no pretentiousness or arrogance, no gimmicks, just rich, diverse music carried off beautifully.
I saw Submotion Orchestra live at Momo in London with my fiancee. The place was gorgeous- soft lighting, great acoustics, and all around very classy. The woman singing was in a beautiful black dress, off the shoulder. Her voice was soft, and sweet. Very melodic. I was not expecting the voice that came out when she started singing.
The music was a nice mix of electro, classic, and soul. Also notable was the stellar drumming and the keyboard. I noticed the trumpet especially- it really stuck out as real talent, hiding in the music but still present. The songs were upbeat but moody, and didn't always seem to mesh, but in the most wonderful way.
Basically, if you like their sound on CD, you are going to love them live- they don't need a studio to sound professional. One of my favorite of their songs was "All Yours". The crowd wasn't as energetic as you usually want at a live show, but for this, it works- everyone got totally lost in the music. We closed our eyes and just listened. I hope to start hearing their music in more places. This is the kind of music that deserves recognition, and to be on the radio.
Absolutely brilliant live performance. A very diverse sound with fantastic vocal performances. Sound levels were perhaps a little heavy on the lower end but vocals still shone through.
