It is no wonder that The Hilliard Ensemble have made the name for themselves that they have. This British male vocal quintet has been together since 1974, and is named after the Elizabethan miniaturist painter Nicholas Hilliard.
They perform this evening, together in a huge cathedral that is the perfect venue for their sound, which bounces of the stone walls and floors, riding a reverb that let keeps their voices sounding resonant as they deliver an authentic performance of what is known to us now as early music. The program this evening focuses on music from the Medieval and Renaissance times performing contemporary music. The piece of music “Gloria” is such a fantastic highlight to experience, with the beautiful contrapuntal melodies filling the air. You can hear a pin drop in this Cathedral, as the audience is completely motionless being swept off their feet by the beautiful music created by the Hilliard ensemble. Definitely one of those bands that you need to hear if you can appreciate this kind of music, as they perform is so well in such a faultless manner.
