Even without the use of potent lyrics, since Maybeshewill is an entirely instrumental band, they manage to tell the audience a story with their music. Using samples from movies, they insert dialogue into their music in a way that seems natural and emphasizes the emotion they create with their instruments. Many of their songs start slowly but then pick up midway through, like “He Films the Clouds Pt. 2” and “In Another Life, When We Were Cats” but all of their songs have a very epic, anthemic feel to them, especially live. Now a 5-piece group, after rotating members in and out since their inception in 2005, they’ve finally struck the perfect balance with guitarists Robin Southby and John Helps, bassist Jamie Ward, drummer James Collins and, rounding out the sound, keyboardists Matthew Daly. All of the guys clearly love the music they make and its evident in the way they energetically play their instruments on stage. Even though it may seem weird to go see a purely instrumental band play live, without the element of singing along to their songs, the audience doesn’t seem to mind and just becomes entranced in the music. With a new album out now, Fair Youth, these guys are only getting better and its highly recommended to go see them live.
Maybeshewill rocked the house last night in Berlin's Casseiopeia. The small club was rammed full of sweaty, head bobbing fans, who cheered at each song upon recognition. The unique blend of tingly poppy looped tunes with hard bottom bass 'metal' sound, hit the crowd like a storm hits a ripe wheat field. Great venue. Great band. Great crowd. A perfect night out.
