Featuring the gruff voice of John Taylor (Chaka Demus) and the smooth tones of Everton Bonner (Pliers), the duo found crossover appeal that saw them find hits internationally, earning three Top Five singles in a row in the British music charts. Chaka Demus and Pliers had already established solo careers before they joined forces, earning a number of hits during the 1980s.
Chaka Demus’ duets with Admiral Bailey, “One Scotch” and Yellowman, “Everybody Loves Chaka” brought Chaka early fame, becoming a well known presence in Kingston’s (Jamaica) music scene. Pliers equally made his talents known through his work with a host of producers including King Jammy, King Tubby, Black Scorpio, King Jammy and Coxsone Dodd. Tracks like “Snake in the Grass” and “Bam Bam” impressed Demus, who was quick to note his belief that the two could mesh well on record.
This was soon to be imagined, after the dup collaborated on the Ossie Hibbert-produced “Gal Wine,” before then working with Ranking Joe on “Brenda” and “Rough This Year” for Blackbeard. Yet it was when they worked with the legendary reggae production team of Sly & Robbie that Chaka and Pliers found their first major hit, with “Murder She Wrote.” Their second topped that success, “Tease Me,” which reached number three on the UK Singles Chart. Covers of Curtis Mayfield’s “She Don’t Let Nobody” and the Isley Brothers’ classic “Twist and Shout” followed the trend and broke into the Top Five also, before “Tease Me” made it three consecutive Top Five singles.
In 1994, the duo released their debut album, “Tease Me,” which collected all of their hits into one package. “She Don’t Let Nobody” followed the next year, earning a spot at number four on the British Album Chart. “For Every Kinda Person” was the duo’s third offering in 1997, after which they went relatively quiet. Whilst still performing, no new material arrived for several years, until Pliers released a solo effort in “Billion Dollar Latte” in 2012. Despite little new music, Chaka Demus & Pliers have still enjoyed continued success and popularity through their classic releases of the 1990s.

Jamaican/pop duo Chaka Demus & Pliers were a huge hit initially in the 90s in the UK despite the country being in the grip of Brit-pop fever. There sounds seemed to toe the line between roots and pop incredibly well and earned themselves a huge fanbase that continually attended tours until the band decided to work on other projects in 1997.
Ten years later they return with the same energy and a handful of new songs for the fans who remained loyal through the hiatus. It feels as though old friends reunite at their show as the vibe is absolutely brilliant and the two artists have brilliant rapport with their audience. Everybody is grooving to the reggae beats and singing along to the more pop numbers such as 'She Don't Let Nobody' and 'Gal Wine'. However there is only one way that tonight was going to end and that is with 'Twist & Shout' which is a total 90s anthem and has everybody dancing along with the duo.
