Stepdad is a quirky indie synthpop band that doesn’t seem to take themselves too seriously, but their music is something that is seriously catchy.
Stepdad’s music has the shimmering, poppy synth sounds that swarmed the airwaves in the ‘80s, and they are not afraid to take these dated sounds and turn them into something new. The band’s loveable characteristics come from their lack of inhibitions to let loose and play the most cliché pop music. Their lead singer, Mark Tafel, is a large guy with a manly beard, but he is not afraid to dance around the stage and sing pop choruses in a high pitched falsetto voice. The band is able to take unique electronic sounds and blend them with other sounds to create a lively sound. Their synth driven sound is at the forefront of the music, but the acoustic drums, guitars, and bass are used to add a rock sound into the mix. The bass holds down the rhythm with the upbeat bass lines that create a funky sound in the music. Stepdad’s music is also filled with anthemic choruses that include vocal participation from most of the members, and even the audience is likely to jump into the performance to sing along.
Stepdad have a unique appearance when they perform live. Mark Tafel will often wear wacky earrings and ‘80s-esqu sunglasses. The whole band gets into their musical performance and can be seen grooving and dancing to their catchy pop sound. Seeing Stepdad perform live will take you back in time to a place where you can dance your heart out to synthpop and feel know pangs of remorse.
