Andrew's music career really began in 2001 after the release of his debut 'I Get Wet' which gained controversy for the new artist as the cover art featured a photo of Andrew W.K. with a stream of blood running from his nose onto his chin and neck. It peaked at #1 on the Heatseekers chart and the notoriety it gained the musician accumulated in an invitation to join Ozzy Osbourne's Ozzfest that summer. It also included a UK top 20 hit in the form of 'Party Hard'.
The follow-up 'The Wolf' was released in 2003 and entered the US Billboard top 200 at #71. It gained rave reviews from the likes of Drowned In Sound, The A.V Club and Blender. The tour was a credit to Andrew's dedication as a musician, as after breaking his foot on one date he performed the remainder in a wheelchair.
He's released a number of albums exclusively in Japan where his music is popular. The 2009 LP 'Gundam Rocks' which features covers of the music from the legendary Gundam anime TV to celebrate the show's 30th anniversary. Since this release he has not recorded or put out any new music, instead focusing on other venues including TV, film and business. He also owns the record label Skyscraper Music Maker which is based in London and Manhattan.

As one would expect from an artist who has based not only his recorded output but his entire philosophical world view on the physical and spiritual act of partying, Andrew WK’s live shows are just that – a huge knees up from note one that lets up not one jot for the subsequent hour or so. He’s a vastly intriguing fellow, Mr. WK – motivational speaker, agony aunt, Andy Kaufman-like satirist even – but to over think his art when in the process of witnessing it is to miss the point. Songs like ‘It’s Time To Party’ and ‘The Wolf’ are knowingly stupid, but their message of communal hedonism is elevated to a level of biblical importance when played live, an experience that makes their recorded counterparts sound comparatively tinny. As you might anticipate from an experience that thrives on friendship quite so much, stage invasions are commonplace, and aren’t limited to final song of the encore territory. Andrew WK, supremely sweaty man of the people, has little interest in barriers between performer and audience. He’s very little interest in anything, other than partying with you and your mates. And when it comes to that, he does what he likes, and he likes what he does.
Michigan punk rock songwriter and instrumentalist Andrew W.K. has a huge reputation on the live circuit as one of the most energetic and intense performers. He thrives on large stages and in intimate venues in equal measure and no matter how big the crowd is, he makes sure everybody is involved and is having the best night simply for having bought his ticket.
I don't think anybody thrashes a piano harder than Andrew and the more the crowd cheers him on the harder he batters the keys during the instrumental breakdowns of 'Ready to Die' and 'We Want Fun'. Most Americans are known for their immeasurable energy yet Andrew really trumps them as he launches himself from side to side of stage during 'You Will Remember Tonight' as the crowds become more and more raucous. It has all been leading to a massive finale of 'Party Hard' and 'I Get Wet' which is complete with a stage invasion from Andrew's loyal followers. They all jump together as the outro plays and it is clear that nobody wants to go home.
Andrew WK's reputation for wild, manic, uncontrolled shows precedes him. Speaking from experience, I can assure you that he earned it twice over. As soon as he steps onstage, the vibe changes and everybody sheds all self-awareness of any sort. The expectation is that you act as happy and enthused to be there as possible, which you will meet with no challenge. As per live sound, Mr. WK typically holds up well to his recording, as per his questionable singing but spectacular piano playing. If you go to see his show for anything, however, see it for the crowd and overall experience. You will make 100 friends in one hour, and I don't think you can do that anywhere aside from at one of these parties.
Everytime I think of an Andrew W.K. Show, I get a little antsy and get butterflies in my stomach.
I've been to a lot of shows, from large arenas, to very personal stages. I've seen Andrew perform in a large outdoor arena and a small bar venue, both amazing! Don't worry about working out today, you'll be set at the show! And if you're feeling adventurous, hop up on stage and rock out right next to him, it's an Andrew W. K. tradition! Most def a fun experience and a must see, whether it's just him, or his full band. Bring a water bottle and get ready to PARTY HARD!
What a show! Andrew WK and his band are a force to be reckoned with.... the energy, enthusiasm and love of music shines through every pore. Such a fun show, I will definitely want to see them again next time they're in the UK. My only regret is not having made the effort before now to see them perform live, they're fantastic!
