Prior to forming Phox, musician Zach Johnston had released a solo album entitled “Sonntag”, of which a number of Phox members collaborated on. Subsequently, along with Matt Holem, Davey Roberts, keyboardist Matt Roberts, and bassist Jason Krunnfusz, the unofficial group were asked to play a one-off show at Boo Bash festival in May 2011. However being without songs or a singer, the band recruited old school friend Monica Martin. For the one off show the band mainly played songs from Johnston’s solo album “Sonntag” as they they all knew the songs well.
With the success of the show, the band decided to stay together with Martin taking the songwriting reigns and the rest of the band working on the musical arrangements. With this set-up the band released the EP “Confetti” in 2013, which featured a video for every song and led to a Daytrotter music session, significantly widening the band's audience and appeal. The band subsequently played the 2013 South by Southwest and Lollapalooza festivals, and became the opening act on Blitzen Trapper’s national tour. In September 2013 the band joined the Lumineers at London’s iTunes Festival, the recording of which subsequently became the EP “Live at iTunes Festival”.
Phox later signed with the Brooklyn, New York based label Partisan Records who issued the band’s eponymous debut album in June 2014. Recorded at Justin Vernon’s studio in Wisconsin, the album earned warm reviews and was supported with an impressive tour schedule with headlining shows as well as shows in support of the likes of Dr. Dog, The Head and the Heart, and Courtney Barnett.

PHOX are the new kids on the indie-folk scene. The pride of Baraboo, Wisconsin, they have a core connection with their audience. Monica Martin is a wondrous frontwoman. Her sultry vocals seem to glamour the crowd as though she’s their surrogate mother, singing them lullabies.
After releasing their debut EP, Confetti, last year, they’ve gone on to put out their first full-length album, which has gotten a rave reception. In the lead up, they’ve been making waves on the international circuit, having played Lollapalooza and the iTunes Festival in London, in support of indie-folk bosom buddies, The Lumineers.
Their live show featured a whole host of hits off Confetti and their self-titled LP, including the charming, whistle-along, Slow Motion, the mystical, 1936, and the huge crowd pleaser Calico Man.
It remains to be seen whether PHOX with reach such great heights as The Lumineers but they’re off to a solid start, getting buzzed about in all the right places. They’re one to watch out for, and will no doubt be appearing on bills for summer festivals all over.
Phox did an outstanding job. The chemistry between the group members is awesome. I am sorry the group is not going to perform anymore. I didn't care for their opening group, however they were enjoyable WHEN THE BASS WAS LOWERED! I am 57 years old and not HARD OF HEARING! The bass during both groups was TOO LOUD! When the bass reverberated off my seat and traveled into my spinal cord that was absolutely ridiculous!!! I came to listen to music not a cheap thrill of vibrations knocking me out of my seat!!! KEEP THE PERFORMANCE LIGHTS ON STAGE DO NOT FLASH THEM INTO THE AUDIENCE!!!! I have a seizure disorder and flashing lights in my face is capable of tripping my seizure triggers. I didn't appreciate having to CLOSE MY EYES DURING PART OF THE CONCERT to be absolutely certain I didn't seizure.
Phox always sounds amazing live or recorded. I have seen them live twice now and can tell they are fairly new at giving performances. The lead singerhas noticeable stage fright. She seems to keep her eyes closed the entire time and if she makes a slight mistake she covers it up by laughing in the middle of a song or even talking. She often seems hard on herself. (Which is ridiculous because of her obvious talent) saying things like "sorry everyone, i have a alight cold" or just making faces when she thinks she hit the wrong note. I thought it was just the one show that was a little off for her but most recently at the firefly music festival she did it again. It just seems unprofessional and it's a shame because they sound so good.
