I saw Telepopmusik at Wireless Festival. The audience was evidently excited to hear the bands most recent material from the second album ‘Angel Milk’, released in 2005. As the trio opened with ‘Stop Running Away and ‘Hollywood On My Toothpaste’ it was evident that we weren’t going to be disappointed with the set listing. Telepopmusik are characterised as a down tempo electronic music trio. Their ambient and chill out vibes translate particularly well in ‘Genetic World’ with softly sung vocals, electronic melodies and chilled beats. ‘Love Can Damage Your Health’ shows the more trip hop elements of Telepopmusik’s discography featuring soul and funk influenced break beat percussion, with sweeping string sections, brass band strains and the soulful vocals of Angela McCluskey. On stage Telepopmusik were relatively understated yet their music swept over the audience bringing a calm, chill out atmosphere; much appreciated after the more energetic acts that had previously taken to the stage. The trios gentle vocals and beats quietly mesmerised the audience before culminating in the more experimental (almost neo-psychedelic or ambient math rock) electronic phrases which Telepop are known for. I was delighted to hear the band play live and hope to see them again once their new material is released. My favourite tracks were definitely ‘Close’ and ‘Last Train To Wherever’, where the chill out down tempo vibe is at its most nuanced. An entrancing experience!
